LOL @ this fake news. i'd be surprised if the average 25 year old in america could even run 1 mile in 12 minutes without stopping. 8 minute miles is around what an average high school senior on the cross country team runs.

https://archive.is/HkfT4#selection-5135.14-5135.38

Getting your VO2 max estimate requires a little math. Take your distance (in miles), multiply it by 35.97 and then subtract 11.29. This is your VO2 max estimate. You can also plug your distance into an online calculator and compare your results against those in your age group.

For instance, 1.5 miles in 12 minutes corresponds to a VO2 max of about 43. That would be an excellent score for a 65-year-old man, good at age 45 and average at 25. For a woman, a score of 35 would be excellent at 65, good at 45 and average at 25.

track/CC kids are doing way, way better than 8-minute miles. 8 minutes would be absolutely unacceptable for a non-track athlete.

CR. According to Johns Hopkins research, 56% of young adults between the ages of 18 and 25 are overweight or obese. There's no way these people are running 1.5 miles in 12 minutes.

They're not saying the average American can run 1.5 miles in 12 minutes, it's stating that an ideal average 25 year old man should be able to run 1.5 miles in 12 minutes. 25 yo American men are nowhere near the ideal average fitness in reality.

Hard disagree.

Any non-fat high school kid should break 8 minutes. I think I ran an 8 minute mile in like 1st grade.

I ran like 6:30 in high school and that was like the top couple of kids in my gym class.

It looks like an actual cross country kid is hoping for 5 minutes and below...

LOL u guys are delusional when it comes to athletics. if you ran 5 minute miles, you'd be the national high school champion. if you ran 6 minute miles, you'd be Top 50 in a fairly big state like Pennsylvania. If you ran 8 minute miles, you'd qualify for states in most states. i bet you also think you could hit 10 HRs in a MLB season if you trained for a year.

sure, but this NYT test is more than 1 mile, and we're talking about all 25 y/o americans, not just the ones who run competitively. y'all are still delusional AF. most 25 y/o's would get winded and stop running after half a mile or less. nevermind 1.5 miles at a good pace.

im 40 years old now. i can do a dead hang for 1 minute, i can do a plank for 3 minutes 10 seconds, and i can only run 1.5 miles at 5mph, because i have pain issues in my calves, otherwise id probably be able to run a bit faster at 6mph or maybe even 6.5 if i pushed it. in my 20s i once ran two miles at a 7.5 mph pace on the treadmill and it was pretty difficult. it was probably just about my limit. i used to run 2 miles at 6.5mph like it was nothing all the time, but now my calves are in too much pain when i try to run.

I am on the wrong end of 30s and probably 25 lbs overweight and drink too much but i do a thing every other day where i run 2 miles straight at a 7:03 pace (8.5 mph), then pause and walk for maybe a third of a mile, then run a mile at 7:30 pace, then slow jog whatever the rest of the way home is. Seems to do good for maintaining weight. If I stopped drinking I would lose those 25 easily. If the test is “can a 25 year old run a single mile in 7:00” then it’s really sad if the majority cannot.
