When I got this cat, he had never gone outdoors. But he clearly wanted to. I lived in a place where it was safe for him to do that, but he was an idiot about it, and there were woods nearby with other predators. He would approach strangers instinctively, and I could tell he wouldn't have his guard up against a fox. The neighbors liked him though and requested that I let him keep going outside.

Then one night he just didn't come home. He didn't come home the next day either. By the third day I figured a fox or coyote had gotten him. I was like "fuck it, he thought he had what it took to be an outdoor cat, at least that coyote is eating good."

Then a day or two later he came home, all dirty and wet. The first thing he did was shit in the litter box, as if that was what motivated him to find his way home in the first place. After that he never wanted go out again. The neighbors got offended and thought I was lying when I said he didn't want to go out anymore.

Imagine believing you've formed some kind of bond with a neighbor's cat, such that the cat misses your company. Imagine thinking the owner is being cruel to the cat be depriving it of your affection. I'm saying "the cat is afraid to go outdoors now," and this lady is saying "but I live right here."

It's weird. My neighbor has a cat that likes to visit, but the thing about cats is that they really deep down don't give a shit about you.

That's not quite true. They do care about people, but they're also very able and willing to move on if they think it's best to do so.

The cat was extra-affectionate with everyone who wasn't me. If a stranger came to visit, that cat was rubbing up against them the moment they walked into the door. I'm pretty sure he wanted someone else to adopt him.

The thing is, if he had a problem with me, it was that I wasn't feeding him enough. There was no other reason for him to seek another owner.

Jesus, I just remembered something weird about this cat.

When I first acquired it, the first things it let me know was how much it hated riding in the car. Is was fine in pet carrier until you got moving. So this local vet gave me some valium and said to just knock its ass out on benzos for the ride. He gave me enough to last 24 hours even though it was only a 5 hour drive and said "go ahead and give the cat a heavy dose."

I'm pretty sure I just broke the tablets into shards and crammed down the cat's throat, followed by a 1ml syringe of water. But the valium had the reverse effect. It made the cat even more insane during the whole trip. But it wasn't until the end when I took him out of the carrier that I realized why. His whole ass end was paralyzed. He couldn't use his hind legs at all. He was dragging his ass by his front paws and howling non-stop for the next 10+ hours, all night because he couldn't move his back legs
