Just did a pro fitting for the first time and got fit into G440 irons and wedges. Was in hard denial at first, as I couldn't wrap my mind around the G440's bizarre back aesthetic, but already had g440 max driver and FW

Couldn't sleep for 2 nights thinking about how smooth the Pings felt, so I ordered them to my fitter's specs (retro spec loft, .25" +.5 lie, 65g)

2025 bag:

G440 max 9* driver, 4W, 5H, 6i-P, 47, 52, 56, 60.06 Vokey LW, Bettinardi SB1

Still have a slot open for 1 more club. Will probably add the Chipper or a second (mini) driver

I traded in a full combo set of 2023 Callaways, Odyssey AI putter and a couple '23 drivers on Ping's website

Final order netted out to like $50

I am 37, father of 3 boys, and where I live is surrounded by beautiful golf courses, both public and private. Is it too late for me to learn how to play golf? I want my boys to play it and I've kind of resigned myself to never playing it. Not unlike skiing, I have accepted that I won't ever do that. Unlike skiing, however, I feel like I'd really love to play golf. Thoughts? How to get started? My oldest (5) loves mini golf and I was thinking about enrolling him in a PGA junior clinic when he turns 6 next summer (the youngest age you can join)

You and your kids are the perfect age to start playing together

The reason I started playing in my 40s was to have a future activity with my kid

Enroll your kids in First Tee and get them a preowned kids set from USA Golf based on their height

I just woke up at 630am today to enroll my kid in First Tee because golf is insane where I live

For yourself just get Callaway Costco or Kirkland beginner set. It'll be more fun getting fitted for new clubs once you can hit the ball consistently

There is a First Tee 20 min. from my house. Very cool.

So I go to Costco and buy a Kirkland beginner set - then what? Do I take 1 on 1 lessons? Go to the range?

IMHO:

1) read Ben Hogan's Five Lessons, but ignore the part on ball placement at setup (Hogan had a weird setup with the ball always positioned on his left heel to battle a nasty hook--no modern tour player or instructor follows this). Everything else he wrote (grip, take back, swing, wrists, weight shift, sequencing) is 100% still applicable

2) watch this video and internalize it:

https://youtu.be/ASH06DwHaRw?si=XI3-rPubmoG_YEdf

IMPORTANT: don't watch any other videos

3) go to driving range a few times for fun and have 0 expectations

If you still think golf is fun, then

4) take indoor lessons somewhere they use film replay and simulator data (Golf Tec and Golf Code in SoCal) and get a rapsodo mobile launch monitor to practice

5) after 1-3 months play on a real course

I'm a "member" of semi-private course that's 5 mins away, and have unlimited monthly pass to an indoor sim

There's a 9-month waiting list for a CC in another city that opened during COVID with $40k initiation fee

The nearest country club has $225k initiation fee / $50k annual, even longer waiting list, and you have to be sponsored by 2 existing members to apply

Have one open spot I'm not sure what to do with:

Driver: G430 Max 10.5 (9.5 flat) or 430 10k 10.5 (9.5 flat) (picked up a G430 10k 9.0 but am going to flip it. picked up a G430 10k 10.5 and am testing it with some different shafts to see if it can knock out the 430 Max)

5w (4w): Cobra LTDX 18.5 @ 17.0

4h: cobra king tec 21.0

5-GW: I have 2 sets: Ping i230 standard spec on DG 105s, Srixon Zx4/Zx5 MkII mixed set on KBS C Taper Lite 110s

SW: Callaway Mack Daddy 2 56/14 bent to 55/13

LW: Callway Jaws Raw 60/10

Top end of the bag needs to be figured out: Have a LTDX 3w, LTDX 7w, Srixon utility 4 iron, and the regular ZX4 and i230 4 irons sitting around. Might go with 2 drivers for the time being and configure one more draw bias and one fade bias...or maybe pick up a mini driver

Same as last year:

titleist 915 D3 46" fujikura fuel shaft

Titleist 910 15* Mitsubishi diamana s flex

Titleist TSR 18* fujikura whatever the fuck it's called. the white thing.

Titleist 585 21* adila NV shaft that I bought drunk on ebay in like 2007

Ping i500 5-PW. Project X 6.5

Vokey SM9 50*, 54*, 60*

Cameron studio squareback putter

Ping Hoofer 3 I've had since 2004

shoes: Footjoy Tour Alpha (new pair), FJ Myjoys, FJ Fury (comfy but the white mesh in the front gets stained and looks like it's covered in cat piss), plus like 5 random pairs of old dryjoys I can still sort of wear.

Stasof gloves, ProV1x balls, Bushnell Phantom GPS, French Francs for ballmarkers, white towel with blue stripe down the middle that I steal from courtyard marriott indoor pools whenever I want a new one

Author: He flexed his right muscle.

Current:

Driver: Titleist TSi3 w/ Ventus TR Blue (this will continue to stay in the bag for awhile, hit it too good to change)

3W: TM Sim 2, with Graphite Design AD IZ (not super happy with this and will probably be making a change)

3i/hybrid: Alternate b/w a Callaway Apex UW 21* or Titleist T200 3i w/ hybrid shaft depending on course/conditions (I like these fine, but looking into changing shafts on both—they’re too light compared to the rest of my set)

4-PW: Titleist T100 w/DG x100 (work great, no changes needed)

Wedges: Vokey 52, 55 & 60. These are a couple years old, so probably time to upgrade.

Putter: LAB Mezz1 Broomstick (had some good moments with it last year without a lot of practice. Will probably stick it out)

Main focus will be on fixing the top of my bag. I think I’m going to look at getting a mini driver and 4w and swapping based on course. I could use the mini on my home course, which has a few holes where driver is too much and I don’t have long approaches into the Par 5s. 4w would be nice for some of the longer courses I play where I need it for second shots into par 5s.
