Trump’s presidential campaigns have always painted him as an outsider and a target for the establishment (the media, the Deep State, etc.). This adds tremendous credibility to those arguments. He was convinced of a felony for a victimless crime for some cryptic reasons that most people don’t understand.
Biden was originally supposed to be about normalization and restoring our institutions. Instead we are seeing further degradation of American values and norms (weaponization of the justice system for political reasons). Democrats were literally campaigning across the street from the trial. It will also play well with blacks who feel persecuted by the system.
He won’t be put in jail, so he can keep campaigning. And he will milk this. |

I think the more interesting question is what will be the conditions of his probation. Honestly, if I were Merchan and wanted to fuck with Trump's chances of reelection, giving him a curfew and/or restrictions on traveling out of state (both of which are standard probation restrictions in my state) would be a lot more harmful than sending him to jail. |

I do tend to agree that the number of people who will decide not to vote for Trump over this is also very small. But there are still a nontrivial number of swing voters who say that they will not vote for a convicted felon. And less than a point separates Trump and Biden in WI/MI/PA. If Trump loses even a percent or two of support over this, that could be the ballgame. Plus it means that Trump will have to spend even more of his money on legal fees rather than TV ads or campaign field offices. So while I doubt this is a major game changer, it's silly to think that this is a positive for Trump. |
