if he stepped down and allowed a primary to happen he would have been seen as washingtonian. would have actually supported the idea that he and dems are about service over self. no one would be able to say with certainty that he was senile, certainly not that he tried to hold power despite it.
now his entire senate career and (what libs remember as) being #2 during pax obama is down the drain. if he walked away in 2023 his legacy would have been "guy who saved us from the evil cheeto." now it's all gone. this is what he'll be remembered for. |
