i think school loyalty can stem from either great sports and social scene OR prestige. a school that has neither is not going to engender loyalty from its alums. |

but my senior year roommate was MAD as FUCCCCK about being dinged at harvard. she never told me she applied and was rejected, but i surmised it. her twin brother went there and she was always defensive about it. she'd always try to point out ways in which yale was better than harvard and bristled when people would mention that harvard is most people's first choice. |

and yeah YPU is really big, as is the newspaper and some other nerdy stuff. sports are really unpopular (even as ivies go) and few people major in sciences. the school actually makes it really difficult by putting all the science classrooms like a mile away from main campus lol. |

oh and the frat scene is really lame also. past junior year, societies are what's important, but most people aren't in one, so it's like meh. one of my close friends was tapped for a second-tier society (belezius i think) and she became a huge obnoxious bitch afterwards. she acted like her society stuff was so secretive and she was always making allusions to all the cool stuff they did that she couldn't talk about. it was lulzy. |

a good buddy of mine here in NYC was the captain of the yale debate team and got tapped for skull. he turned it down for wolf's head and turned down both YLS and HLS for a finance job. |

Much to the chagrin of XO, I was one of the few that turned down H for Y, mainly because I had a fucking great time at Bulldog Days (that weekend still one of my top ten undergrad moments).
Have friends from all of HYP, none of us (that had the option) ever regretted our choices for an instant. |

Edit: assuming the intellectual caliber question was a separate inquiry, the answer to your question is very. For example, two of my randomly assigned freshman roommates scored 1600 on their SATs. I remain best friends with both to this day, and each is wildly successful in his own right. |

Transformative in the sense that my five best friends all came from college, and we're extremely close. In talking to my friends from other schools, a lot of 'em haven't developed those kind of friendships, which made me realize that that shit is very much an underrated part of the undergrad experience.
Also have a lot of close buddies from my society. But while nice, it seems a little forced. I'm still closer with the doods I lived with for 6-7 yrs (in college and in MFH). |

My best friend from high school went to Harvard. Saturday nights there are pretty rough. I prefer Princeton to Yale, but only because I'm a prep.
I'd prefer Stanford, Dartmouth, Duke, and Brown to any of HYP. HYP life is pretty stilted. |
