Kamala has easier upside because she is still an unknown to a large chunk of voters, but it’s not that easy, mainly because most of the people who are low info are also deeply skeptical/cynical about politics in general, so her entire “I’m your fun, drunk aunt” schtick is not working with them. They also aren’t listening for some magic populist policy statement as politics nerds so often imagine.
But for Trump the downside is that the more that independents and swing voters (who tend to hate politics) see him and they are reminded that he’s a narcissist and a clown. The last two times they thought about him were the debate with Biden where he looked great by comparison and the shooting, which he obviously crushed as a photo op. So if he gets on stage tonight and starts sounding like his unhinged Twitter/TruthSocial persona it will be jarring to low info swing voters and will feed the narrative that he’s on tilt and flailing while not listening to his advisers. But if Trump from the Biden debate in June shows up it will help significantly. He would then have a perfect string of three big moments in the campaign where he looked strong, competent and vigorous. I just don’t think anything about the last six weeks suggests he’s capable of that. |

Back in June he knew he was winning and Biden was fucked, and he couldn’t fathom that Biden would actually drop out and he would have to run against Kamala without the benefit of a primary drawing her to the left.
