If featured the iconic Indian on the obverse (there is great debate who the model for the Indian was) and a powerful American Bison on the reverse. The bison was modeled off of “Black Diamond” in the Central Park Zoo. The nickel is the first, and only, U.S. coin to feature an animal other than an eagle 🦅 (at least until modern coin garbage like the state quarters, many of which feature animal like bears, fish, bison, etc.) Here I have the starts of my collection. The top coin is the original design, which shows the bison on a raised abutment or butte or whatever. The words “Five Cents” are in relative high relief. The bison looks proud and free. They found that these coins wore down very quickly (these old nickels are 75% copper and 25% nickel). Because of this, today genuine BU examples like these are not necessarily hard to find, but certainly coveted. Most coins are worn down and slick. Anyway, with the type 1, the wear was so excessive they changed the design so the bison is standing on a straight plain and the words “Five Cents” are protected under the relief of the flat plain to avoid wearing away so quickly. https://imgur.com/a/Rn6Hc2k |
