For instance, was watching Cool Runnings. Every character has a motivation, a conflict, an arc, and a resolution.

There's the rich kid who is timid and has to learn to stand up to his Dad who is trying to plan his life.

There's the guy who came from nothing and is trying to better his life.

There's the anger between the guy who fell and the guy who tripped them and how they learn to put it past them and be friends.

There's the main guy who is trying to emulate his father and tries to emulate the Swiss, only to realize he needs to embrace his own roots.

There's the coach trying to navigate his way back from a cheating and grappling with what he did and why he cheated.

Like you contrast that with Marvel shit, and it's like "There's a guy who is evil so he wants a magic glove to kill people, and then the good guys work together, but then stop working together for some reason that doesn't make sense, and then they all work together again and win.

Even adult movie these days don't really have that much going on. Awards go to shit like Nomadland, which is just 3 hours of depressing nonesense. Or Everything Everywhere All At Once - which is a bunch of tropes meshed together with people fighting with dildos.

Everything today is allegedly more sophisticated because it doesn't adhere to traditional norms. But what's harder? Writing a movie where nothing happens, or when random subversive stuff happens ever 30 seconds?

Or is it actually harder to write believable characters, who are going through archetypal journies, all fit neatly into coherent plot that neatly wraps up in 105 minutes?

hollywood writers these days are strung out on tutu and weed and everything is written to appeal to 'global audiences'.

they've taken the approach of stretching storylines out as far as possible to get streams.

the artistry has been gone for a long time. kids' movies used to serve as a forum for teaching values.

even hallmark slop is better.

The people who write for the media are just objectively stupider and less sophisticated now than they were previously. Actually they've been getting steadily stupider and less sophisticated for a few hundred years

Contrary to how it might seem, writing good fiction requires a well above average IQ and sophistication of world understanding. Even if all the brown people, females, and half-Jewish nepo hires who are now the "writers" in Hollywood did their absolute good faith best to write good movies, they'd still be bad. They're just too retarded to do it

All true, but Cool Runnings is a legit fantastic movie so not exactly median for the genre. Many, many Supporting Actor Oscars have been handed out for worse performances than John Candy's

I had some random 90s "thriller" on in the background while I was working and noticed it had better writing, acting, and characters than modern "blockbusters." Then I looked it up and found out that it wasn't even a real movie, it was one of those made for cable softcore porn films.
