I had a barista express for 6 years before I went up to the Mini. It does make better espresso because you can guarantee that the temperature, flow, and pressure are consistent. The build quality is obviously on another level. I would say the ceiling isn't much higher on an expensive machine (if you're drinking dark roasts - see below) but the floor is much higher. Nearly impossible to pull a bad shot from my mini.
It makes more of a difference if you drink light roasts - they're very finicky so a high end espresso machine will be able to dial in a light roast in ways that a low end machine can't.
That said, once you get into the $3k range the returns are diminishing fast.
Grinder is much more important than the machine, however. After beans, the grinder is the most important part of your setup. It's why I spent so much on one, and if I ever decided to get into light roasts I would spend the same amount on a grinder dedicated to light roasts (the MC6 is best for medium/dark, which is what I prefer).
