Being a manager has been busier and more stressful than any of my IC roles, even when I was a senior principal engineer. I have 5-6 meetings every single day, and the problem with these meetings is that I'm either leading or heavily participating in all of them. I can't just sit back and listen. I have very little down time in between meetings, and that time is used for following up after meetings or preparing for the next meeting, planning work for my codecucks, answering DMs and team messages, etc. When I was an IC, even at a very senior level, I had a lot more down time where I could fuck around.
Also I'm so busy with meetings and admin work that I'm almost fully detached from writing or even just reviewing code. I've done 0.25 code reviews since starting this job over a month ago. Haven't opened a single PR.
At least I get paid nearly 50% more than my highest-paid direct report.
