Weird seeing people start to chart paths in life. Some doing very well (top grad schools, jobs, etc.) and some who've basically been doing retail or been funemployed for 1-3 years.

How is your life going? How are your friends, classmates, etc. doing?

If you're still in college now (or on break from college) you may be classified as part of the Millennial generation, but you were a bit more distant from the financial crisis, which, along with 9/11, is probably the defining event of our generation.

could be never. I happen to agree with krugman and his ilk who think there's been structural changes in the economy such that the unemployment rate may never be below 5-6% again (companies realizing they can just push their current employees harder out of fear and achieve same levels of productivity as before)

It's already cheaper to hire youngs since companies can pay us entry level salary. They could fire one boomer and hire 3 of us. Yet they don't. I don't think this will help.

I was born in '84. I was 16 when 9/11 happened. A lot of guys I went to HS with died in Iraq. I had just accepted my "permanent" offer when the '08 crash happened, and I was quasi-stealth-Lathamed.

I experienced both of your "defining" events WAY more close and upfront than someone born in '89, who was 11-12 when 9/11 happened and couldn't have been sent to Iraq until the Surge, and who was still early enough in college to change majors when '08 happened.

doing alright. I went to a dead-end undergrad to be with a chick and ended up at a T20 law school and got a good regional BIGLAW job paying six figures at 25. My friends from undergrad are all either unemployed, in dead end "sales/commission" jobs, or bank tellers.

the divergence is profound. was at a bachelor party for one of my friends from high school (marriages are also staring to come fast and furious). lots of college and UG friends there....half are consultants, biglawyers, in med school, etc, and half are working at trader joes, unemployed, live at home, etc. and these people basically started out the same.

its the haves and the have nots....and the divergence happening now will continue for our entire lives. personally I'm glad to be on the winning side, for now at least.

Keep in mind, if she's sucking off bankers, that's not a job in banking, that's called a whore. Fuck people. Get a bit more subtle with it for fucks sake. Goodnight.

wtf is this shit

1/2 of the entire generation is under/unemployed

1/4 has a dead end job like "sales" or whatever, or random corporation

1/8 in grad school

1/8 in an "upward mobility" job

This BORT is too connected to consulting/finance b/c outside of that group, almost NO ONE at age 25-26, especially with the rate of millennials going to grad school, is making even close to 6 figures.

I think the summary for us will be great haves and have nots, but also majorly depressed lifetime earnings from heavy debtloads, boomers not leaving jerbs, and people starting careers at 30, instead of 22

Lots of people are working shitty jobs but they get a lot of support from their parents so you can't really tell how bad it is for them. All of the accounting majors I knew have solid jobs with Big 4 or other firms. Finance doods are suffering. I know a lot of fratty finance majors who were relying on their interviewing skills to make up for their shitty GPAs. Guys like that who graduated before 08 are balling out, while the ones after got jack shit.

I'm actually one of the most well off of all my friends. Graduated high school two years late, never went to college, got an IT internship at a large financial company, got hired full time. Born in 88.

weird mix. Most people I know are doing the "How To Make It In America" thing. Basically, trying to start a company or running with a talent (art, writing, blogging, etc). A couple are going into academia. The rest are just accountants, in medical/law school, or doing Masters programs).

most people from my class in my shitivy ('10) seem to be doing fine aside from a few who would have done random shit regardless of the economy (like one guy who just quit his job to climb rocks for six months)

its just that some of them, particularly biz/finance types, had to settle for something a few rungs below what they would've gotten pre-ITE. the cs majors i know are all making 90k+ with ridiculous benefits

i am certainly one of the laziest of my friends and even i will probably end up in a decent (employable non-debt form of) grad school

Credited. The majority of my friends who went to BigStateU law schools ranked T1/T2 are fine. Most of them moved back to their hometowns and make $80-100k working for local firms that are well respected. $80k is a lot of money when you live somewhere like Mobile, AL or Augusta, GA. None of them have too much debt. They either paid in-state tuition or got scholarships so most owe under $50k.

1987 here. College dropout.

-Graduated HS in 2005.

-Went to CUNY 2005-2007, worked paralegal job part time.

-Flunked out of CUNY.

-2008 to 2010 worked as a headhunter focusing on midlevel associate lateral placements at BIGLAW firms. ($32k + bonus, salary raised to $40k second year)

-2010 went to a semester of community college.

-June 2010 got a job as a researcher for big executive search firm ($55k + bonus) focusing on capital markets. Started doing recruiting very quickly. Back and forth b/t NYC and London offices. Got my first apt. in Gramercy w/ a roommate.

- April 2011 left for a competitor and higher salary ($70k + bonus). Moved to new apt. by myself in Hell's Kitchen. 1br in a walk-up.

- January 2012 rejoined my old company as a headhunter, no longer just doing research. Focusing on i-banking, sales & trading, research/strategy jobs at bulge bracket investment banks. Making $75k + year-end bonus. Expecting bonus to put me into six figure territory.

- March 2012 won $80k in the lotto.

- Enrolling in CUNY part-time in the fall semester - earning a BA/MA joint-degree in Economics from Hunter College part-time while working this job. Hopefully graduated by 2015, since going-part time.

I went to Baruch my first time. Currently applying for Total REsignation of credits as I went those Fs and WUs to GTFO my transcript. So I'm "starting fresh", transferring only a summer semester @ QC and my stint at the unnamed community college I attended in an outerborough. 30 credits with a 3.8 GPA.

Never played that much. This was for the huge jackpot (the one before the biggest ever was won). My friend and I got 5/6 numbers, only missing the Power Ball. We split $250k. Came out to $80k each after taxes. We bough $300 worth of tickets that night. Played about a dollar a week, each, before that, for a few months.

Luck. I worked as a paralegal for my dad (solo attorney) and I wanted to work as a litigation paralegal at another firm. I ended up applying to a job on craigslist for what I thought was a paralegal. It was actually a paralegal recruiting job. I laughed about it with the President of the firm that was hiring. We hit it off and he took a chance on me. I ended up working as a researcher there (finding paralegals for the recruiters to recruit) and then paralegal recruiter and ultimately associate recruiter.

I am 24. Econ grad, class of 2010, from a BigStateU. Law school dropout. Live at home. Work graveyard shifts at a hotel for $9/hr. Hobbies include drinking my dad's beer, UK bass music, QQing with Chinese girls, and dicking around with programming tutorials.

Hopefully fucking off to China next year to attend a university there and then teach English. No long term plans.

As you can see, things are going swimmingly.

Sounds credited in this situation. I pretty much plan to do the same. The China plan is a dead end, but I don't care. I have too much debt and other financial fallout from law school to try to do grad school in a useful subject, so I'm really stuck.

I rarely felt safe, hated the starving artists and freelancer crowd, disliked dealing with actresses and actors, and hated parking/traffic. Don't get me wrong, the night life was fun (silverlake, santa monica), but overall, not enough for me to stay.

Yeah, I mean, I'm hoping to be gainfully employed soon, but it's only going to interfere with my free time.

Other than that fine

My friends, for the most part are doing just fine but they're not representative of the population as a whole. went to big state U, then T14 law, starting big law in fall. maybe 10% of my friends are doing comparably (either med school or CS majors). half are doing ok (35k-50k as teachers, low level business jobs, etc.). at least a third are basically fucked (working dead end jobs, some retail, maybe living with parents).

'85/class of '08 here.

All of my friends are divisible into 2 groups: bros who went to good colleges and are now doing well (with the exception of a few Cal bros who barely graduated) or are townies who have not changed at all since high school. I'm kind of jealous of the latter because they just smoke weed and play music and generally seem to be much happier than anyone else. There's a lot to be said about being a slacker. But, actually, a lot of them are miserable because they still live at home and are perpetually broke, so who knows how much longer they can deal with their situation. A few have started to get their shit together cuz reality is sinking in.

My wife comes from a very ghetto desert town and good god her FB friends really shine a light on the dire situation of the modern economy.

10 HS friends who come to mind:

1. State school philosophy -> PhD Philosophy -> political type job that pays 60K in MFH + very involved in politics

2. State school EECS -> dropped out -> scrounging IT temp jobs while unemployed for 2+ years

3. HYPSM philosophy -> job at big tech company -> job at established start-up -> quit and trying to start own start-ups

4. HYPSM math -> Math tutor and trying to figure out what to do next

5. State school math -> started PhD in math -> went on leave and working in analytics job at established start-up

6. State school philosophy -> small-law paralegal -> T6 law school

7. HYPSM biology -> worked in public health jobs -> T20 medical school

8. HYPSM public policy -> MBB -> T14 law school

9. Ivy economics -> UBS IBD -> moved to South America to do something -> start-up management -> quit to work on own start-ups and his get-rich-quick blog

10. HYPSM EE -> R&D at start-up -> dropped out to travel the world for 3 years, including joining a commune in Tel Aviv and spending 4 months in East Africa -> figuring out what to do next.

So, including me, out of the 11 of us, at ages 25-27, exactly 2 are currently earning a salary. And the state school bros seems to have more drive to avoid funemployment. Only the guy who dropped out of college is really depressed about his current state, though.

True millenials were old enough to grasp the significance of the switch to the digital age and the new millenium came during your coming-of-age years -- i.e., you were a teenager in 2000.

HS friends

1) HYPSM computer science --> start-up job

2) Crappy state school biology --> low ranked med school

3) Good state school bio engineering --> low ranked med school

4) Good private bio engineering --> low ranked med school

5) Good state school EECS --> start-up

6) Crappy state school EECS --> engineer

7) Decent private school EECS --> engineer

8) Crappy state school chemistry major --> teacher

9) Crappy state school math major --> works in the service industry

10) Crappy state school biology --> low ranked med school

11) Crappy state school math major --> PhD in math

12) Crappy state school biology --> lab manager

You don't have to be that smart to get into medical school or become an engineer. Except for the friend working in the service industry, they are all doing what they said they wanted to do in high school.
