Apparently I have weirdly long arms and should be using a 33" shaft max. My current putters are all 34.5.
I started fucking around with random 33" putters and it felt like a cheat code

it depends on you posture and general preference more than your actual height/arm length. I'm 6'3 and have always used 34". 35" feels cartoonish and 33" is too tiny.
if you spent the time you spend tinkering with all this nonsense just practicing your putting you'd be better off regardless what type of putter you have.

Practicing for hours with the wrong putter length sounds masochistic
I had a 20 minute putting lesson a couple weeks ago and rolled one from 15+ feet for par a couple days later.
I just had no idea how to setup or rotate before

there is no such thing as the wrong putter length. it's literally just personal preference and comfort and establishing a consistent routine.

I think it's the most common length if you buy off the rack? 34" is considered short and 33" is into custom territory.

You're 6'3" and use 34"
I don't think we disagree on anything
Yeah personal comfort factors are at play, but it's generally accepted that you want your eyes over the ball and arms to mostly hang free
Even a 6'7" NBA player would find 35" too long given the above unless he has t-Rex arms

like less than 1% of golfers will buy a putter then cut it down and regrip it. that's silly.

Wrong
That is exactly what happens every time someone buys a 33" to 34.75" putter
I went to Roger Dunn yesterday and majority of putters on the shelf were 34". Every single one of them was chopped down from 35"
35" seems about as common as 33" at retail, but a significant % of 35" (much more than 1%) will absolutely be cut down if the person uses it more than 2-3 times and especially if they get it re-gripped
