"Mortgage" literally means "death contract". The term comes from Old French, where mort means death and gage means pledge. So that 30-year loan? Even linguistically, it’s designed to haunt you. Forever.

Seems to me that the primary feature of the mortgage is that it can be prepaid at any time, and thus this is what makes it so useful in finance. Perhaps the term refers to the concept that it’s an instrument with a term that can be killed and repaid at any time? So maybe that’s why it’s a death contract—because the term is simultaneously definite and indefinite, just like the delicate balance between life and death.

My prole co-workers are deep in debt and have little to nothing saved. They all have "kids" and are subject to ridiculous family and cultural pressure. They have constant worries about food, gas and other nonsense while my modest wealth increases every month. I haven't had to worry about money in probably ten years.

This is my life. Currently like $420,000 in debt and fret about every expense and my wife losing her job (and losing my own job to be honest).

Yeah, just spent too much money. Got in the habit of spending too much. Parents never gave me anything either. I started borrowing to go to college, then law school, and I’ve been in debt pretty much ever since.

Home ownership is a foul ritual that can have its malefic effects mitigated somewhat by closing the transaction with hard currency and completing it in a single moment of exchange

The mortgage contract comes with all sorts of unspoken terms and obligations that you cannot expect your real estate prole goy mr. sell it to understand or make legible for you

Fortunately contracts calling for performance over the course of a year or longer and contracts regarding the ownership of land must be in writing.
