Because Britain won the Seven Years War

Also no one IN Montreal speaks French anymore and most Quebeckers now are ashamed of their ties to French history and have become woke shitlibs.

Also OP is about the 5th French Republic not global francophone regions thank

1205 > 1791 it was a kingdom with an absolute monarch

Then first French Republic this all went tits up when the Jacobins went nuts beheading people

Napoleon shows up and creates the First French Empire and everyone is so happy with this they forgot all about republicanism (although he maintains some of the changes)

Then they tried a restoration of the monarchy but it was monarchy light.

Then revolutions of 1848 they founded the 2nd French Republic. Mostly everything today is based on this government in spirit.

Then Napoleon's nephew takes over calls it the second empire. He is kind of a benevolent dictator and builds a lot of nice looking streets. He falls into Bismarck's trap and gets got. Then in 1870 something they try Communism for a minute and all the celebrities flee to the Isle of Guernsey or something.

Then they go 3rd French Republic and this is the longest lasting one. They were pretty right wing and did lots of colonization, won WWI and shit. This was the boss Republic. Ran shit. But they got conquered by Germany in 1940 and it all fell apart.

1946 they founded the 4th Republic that one was supposed to be a copy of the 3rd Republic but they got defeated all over the world by their former colonies. They couldn't retake Algeria or Indochina and the government collapsed and there was a Constitutional crisis.

Around the last time the Maple Leafs won the Stanley Cup Charles de Gualle intervened and wrote a new Constitution on a napkin, called it the 5th French Republic and we are now living with the consequences.

Until about 3 months ago not a single French person had any idea what their constitution actually said but now it's a big deal since they have no majority coalition and it's all retards scuffling in parliament.

why is it that France somehow seems to be the best functioning large modern country in Europe despite a) its batshit modern history and b) the fact that it flooded itself with immigrants years before most of the rest of Europe due to Algeria

post-WWII UK has just been a disaster, and Germany has slowly but surely gotten its shit pushed in as their "reliable austist manufacturers" schtick hasn't really kept pace with the Chinese. Italy and Spain are just a Joke. France for their part though is still sort of relevant--it's no America but has a respectable cast of important companies, manages to periodically actually build new infrastructure, still produces a small but noticeable amount of experts (eg most European activity in AI, to the extent it even exists compared to the US and China, is centered in France) etc.

Excellent poast. Important comment.

I will say two things: one is because they benefitted from adopting shitlibbery early on (late 19th century), and two because they were really good at colonization.

In a way France was the original shitlib country. They basically invented leftism. As much as we complain about it, it has some inherent benefits.

For one, they were relatively chill compared to Britain and Germany. Think of them as a more competent version of Spain.

Britain's ideology in the early 20th century was that Britons were super people who needed to be cranked out by Brit pussies in order to make enough people to run the Empire. And Germany we know was seriously butt hurt about not being a Colonial power and we all know what happened there with the whole Lebensraum thing.

At any rate, France was simply more chill than the other two big West Euro powers. They were into books and fine wine. During the July Crisis of 1914 no one had any idea what was going on. Being inward facing was always a good idea. Britain actually wanted to rule the world and they got caught out over their skiis. Germany had to scramble to reinvent itself in the 60s as the autistic car people.

So more importantly, France was great at colonization and integration. The Muslim north Africans who go to France are way more culturally assimilated than the Syrian nutjobs who show up in Berlin and London. It would be like if the US had colonized Mexico for centuries so when Mexicans came here they were already speaking English and knew everything about America. That's what being Franco Algerian is. Their muzzies are way more assimilated. And the right wing guys complain that Paris is unrecognizable, which is true, but every Arab I have ever met in France speaks fluent French.

I think they are US avoided this problem to a large extent too because of our cutthroat job market you have to learn English and 100% of second generation immigrants learn English. Germany and Britain plucked people straight out of a war zone and now are like why are they knifing me.

Idk there's a lot more too it. I would call the French like alpha libs. They're like if California were a country but more religious and traditional and the government had more power to tell people what to do.

the image of france is generally aspirational. it's culture, art, philosophy, etc. a lot of the people in countries they colonized want to be associated with those things so their first reflex isn't to burn it all down like the muslims in the uk, libs in the us, etc.

Yeah it's funny. I agree they were founded by utopian idealists. Also one of the absolute most crucial founding beliefs of French society is that the government owes people a good life. Not a hard sell! And all they ever asked of people was assimilation. Like I think that is a huge factor in success. Anyone can be a part of this country if they assimilate. Adopt our language culture and way of life and you're in. I have met thousands of French Muslims and they were all nice people who wanted to be French. France didn't really start having problems until the same time that Britain and Germany did, too. When you got Zoomers like Mbappé saying France is racist and burn it all down.

France is the ONLY other country in the history of the world to pull off multiculturalism and have it succeed, and yet they're all racist? No they just enforced their language, culture, and values. But until 15 years ago there were no problems. Libs truly ruin everything.

after all the BS of the three elections this year (1 EU, 2 rounds national), they end up with freaking MICHEL BARNIER as PM?!?!?

this is kinda like if Jill Stein won the POTUS election but then come January 20 Liz Cheney is being sworn in and nobody understands what she's doing up there but it's going ahead anyway

Correct.

Woke shitlibs win the most votes, no political power. That's why they are trying to impeach Macron. He alienated the largest party.

Also Barnier can't do anything without RN's tacit endorsement. This is the first minority coalition in French history. The government could be dissolved at any time with a 50%+1 vote. I am hoping this happens. Total chaos communism.

The more I learn about it the more convinced I am that De Gualle was a genius. It took like 7 geniuses to write the US Constitution. De Gualle just kicked it from his head and it randomly turned out to be an elegant balance of power. It's sort of stunning it turned out so well given it was thrown together so quickly by essentially one guy.

French people are just Germans who become romanized earlier than other Germanic tribes, and who were given free land in exchange for loyalty to an empire that no longer exists. Do they know that?

Sorry, it's been the same moment for a thousand years in perpetuity. That moment is we are NOT German and never will. If you are French it is impossible to imagine being German. Not to mention they have fought 4 times in 200 years. They will never accept kraut overlords.

They were Germans for thousands of years. You're only looking at a small snapshot in time, cherry picking your data and committing major logical fallacies.

France has always enjoyed playing both sides

They benefit from quasi US imperial alignment but they get to do their own thing. Before the Iraq War Jacques Chirac wanted Saddam to remain in power so he could sell weapons to the middle east and compete with the US. France has always been in it for themselves

They also do way more for their own people than USA does. They're just playing the game out of self interest. Unlike our shitty country which has put the American people last for 60 years.
