Direct contributions to NATO represent 0.1% of total US defense spending. The vast majority of US defense spending is to protect US interests globally. The US benefits enormously as a result of its military hegemony by having the world's reserve currency and world's largest economy, but Trump etc. act like Sweden should spend 5% of its GDP to defend itself from Norway and Denmark but otherwise get no tangible benefit. |

But the US is the only NATO country that is also a global empire with military interests around the world, and the US benefits enormously from being the global hegemon as a result of its military in a way that these other countries never will. I wouldn't expect countries like Sweden and Portugal to spend as much on military as the US because they don't benefit as much and don't face as many threats because they aren't as influential globally, and I don't think 2.7% versus 3.4% is that big a deal in light of what each country faces in terms of opportunities and threats. The world average is 2.4% and many countries are in much higher conflict areas than Europe. I can understand why Belgium or Slovenia don't want to waste money on fielding large militaries when they are not attractive targets and border only friendly countries. I can also understand why the US spends as much as it does, since it has global interests, regularly fights wars on the other side of the planet and borders non-NATO countries. |
