Been reflecting on how my attitude to github projects has changed.
I used to look for things I could incorporate without changing -- complete reliable functional products, essentially. Through that lens, Github now looks like:
1. Clearly trash, avoid. Incomplete, boneheaded, inapplicable, don't know why anyone even put it online. (surprisingly few now)
2. Maintained, possibly a Name or by a Name, probably something that I could download, build, run, and use as a thing in its own right. Wes-ware! (surprisingly few, given this is what everyone on 2023 Github aspired to be making and getting the mana from)
3. A ton of vibe-coded stuff that has words that look like it would be relevant or useful to your problem, but all the commits were on the same week and that was two months ago and you have no idea if it's in use and a key component of the builder's architecture and just a (2) that doesn't need any further work ... or if the brainfart that required it has passed and it's abandoned incomplete shitware.
But because it's trivial to do so, I can also point my agent at some of the projects in (3) and say "I need a <X>, here are some existing things I found on github, mine them for good ideas and inspiration, then let's brainstorm and design one for me."
I'm wary of doing this, because I don't have confidence in my ability to hit all the NFRs with my own vibed code projects and sometimes I'd love problems to get solved well WITHOUT it all coming down to me and my claw. But it's definitely a third use of github that I don't think I'd fully appreciated.
Am I missing other tricks/reframes with github?
