I struck out at ibanking in UG and am a junkie for financial news. I excitedly follow the markets and have a degree in economics.
I don't know if I enjoy "research" so much, but I certainly do enjoy public speaking. I'm great at it and thrive off of constructing and destroying arguments. I am a champion debater to boot.
Thoughts?

If you dont go to a T14 school there is a 90% chance you will work in shitlaw. In shitlaw there is basically (with limited exception) no such thing as "transactional work." Shit lawyers are in court making appearance 4 days in 5. They shovel reams of shit paper backwards and forwards and generally hate their lives. 90% of the job is paperwork that nobody actually reads and Im not kidding when I say NOBODY. State court judges dont read half the motions before them -- they dont need to because its the same shit over and over again.
There will be public speaking. You will get to tell the judge how your clients compressed disc and whiplash injury is sufficient to overcome threshold in the state and the judge will quietly curse you for bringing this BS case before him and will grant the carriers threshold motion. Everyone in the courtroom will recognize you are a shitlaw lawyer the second they hear its a threshold motion.
95% of your cases will be complete slop and the only people you will hate more than yourself will be your welfare recipient clients and their BS soft tissue injuries. Motor vehicle accidents are 25-40% of the docket in most states. Chances are good that's what you will be doing.
If you are fortunate enough to make biglaw you might actually find yourself doing transactional work, but your "following the market" wont help you any because transactional work is all about not missing commas and making sure terms sheets make fucking sense. You will be a glorified editor. Nobody will give a shit about your deep insights into the market because you arent paid to do the business side of anything. The new hot thing in transactional is FCPA work so maybe you will get to supervise a doc review project in Nigeria.
Biglaw litigation is enough to give a normal person a heart attack. I'd describe the stress, but if you've never had a foot long dildo shoved up your ass you wont really understand.
And despite all this, I dont really hate my job. I dont know know how to do anything else so I've resigned myself to doing this shit until I die.

I'm familiar with most of what you mentioned. I would never pay to attend LS that wasn't a T14 and am planning accordingly. Also, my dad is a solo attorney so I'm familiar with what is commonly regarded as SHITLAW on here.
Within BIGLAW... what do you think is a better gig? Lit or Corporate? Outside of those 2 things, do you think practice groups like T&E, Tax or IP are better? Why? |

Biglaw doesnt do much T&E. Rich people know not to pay $1k an hour for trust docs to be prepared. These days half the tax people are LLM's or CPA's. The firm may pay for you to get the LLM, but in this economy it might not. I could keep going down the list, but the gist of it is to avoid this profession ITE.

But I'm lit and I'm not sure that I'm familiar enough with corporate to tell you what their days are like. From what I gather from friends, there's a lot of sitting around waiting for stuff to happen, and then, bam, you're on a deal, and you work crazy hours. Not sure what the actual work really entails though.
My day-to-day life is about 80% legal research/writing and 20% doc review. Every once in a while, we'll have a meeting and talk about stuff. From what I gather, midlevels do a little less research and more case management stuff, which appears to be talking with the client, figuring out what the juniors should do, and mundane stuff like scheduling. Less sure about what seniors and partners do all day.
Also, if you're in discovery, people spend a lot of time taking depositions, preparing witnesses, etc. Haven't been to trial yet, but that looks basically like a nightmare. |
