My older son has been dating a gal for a year and a half now. He works, she's in grad school (but she's actually a little older than him). He lives in a 3-bdrm apt with 2 other guys. She lives alone. They want to live together but seem afraid to make that leap. So they're looking at a huge rental house that is shared with a bunch of people... there must be 8 bedrooms and about as many people. It has 3 bathrooms and 2 kitchens, plus communal rooms. So they say they're going to take 2 of the bedrooms so they'd each "have their own space" but one room would be like their real bedroom and the other more like an office, but it would have a daybed in it too. So my son says if things don't work out one of them doesn't have to move. First of all this seems cynical to me. And also don't they want their privacy from all the others? I guess they get their privacy in their 2 rooms. My son says he likes living with other people and she says she misses living with other people. Sorry if this is tldr. Also I can't believe I am divulging this much about his life.

very immature and half-assed. like going back to a college living arrangement. also if they break up one of them will end up moving anyway, or else the "community" of the house will be poisoned. just seems pointless.

I don't think there's that much of community. It's not like they're all friends or anything, or even found each other to move into the house. Everybody seems independent, each moved into the place on their own at different times, each has his/her own lease, and they hang out together only if they feel like it. I think some of the people are hardly at home, some people are in their rooms most of the time, but others hang out more.

my buddy and his wife always have had random people living with them since the time they were married. they live in a 4 bedroom home and often have 2 of the rooms "rented" to acquaintances. if anyone needs a place to stay and they have a room they just offer to let someone live with them for like $300. it's sorta weird.

unusual, but could be good if the other people are. separate bedrooms is, of course, the credited response.

a part of me likes the idea b/c if they were just to start living together alone tbh I would worry about whether it's the right step to take and also it's too close to marriage and even though I like her very much I'm not ready to lose my baby
