Do any retailers still print massive 1,000+ page catalogs like Sears did?

or is that era finished?

They even stopped printing the little ones for like Best Buy and stuff. I remember when I was little my parents would give me stacks of those to read. They had more than a decade of them saved up. One of my favorite games was to give myself a budget of $2000 and try to guess exactly how a computer at that price would be equipped for a certain date like August 2002 vs September 1997.

Stuff that can't advertise online still does this. The "cheese pizza" catalogue is still printed.

Catalogs were like Choo$e Your Own Adventures for consumerism.

One second you’re shopping for a chainsaw, the next you’re staring at a cowboy boot-shaped recliner.

Sears had us dreaming we could own a pool table and a rotisserie oven in the same one-bedroom apartment.

Now we just scroll Amazon while it tries to sell us back the travel pillow we regret buying last month.

Consumer-facing catalogs are obviously dwindling

There are some pretty big B2B catalogs that will probably continue to be printed indefinitely. I got sent a Uline catalog recently and it was mildly fascinating, if only because it was a reminder of how a LOT of consumer-facing commerce used to take place. Sure, it's just a collection of boring shit like packaging & warehouse supplies. But there's 500 pages of it! Including all kinds of random stuff I otherwise wouldn't have had any clue on where to procure without googling

yeah; grainger (the industrial supply company) still has a catalog that runs for 3,000 pages, but it's just not as charming as those old consumer-facing catalogs. there's no product staging or creation of sets/imaginary little worlds which the products inhabit. it's just stuff:

I still get a big one from Restoration Hardware a few times a year… a couple hundred thick glossy pages.

Their margins are insane so they can afford to print shit like that. The high end furniture business is 180 as fuck in the age of CNC and 3D printing.

The Argos catalog was 180 as a kid

Seems like a missed op to have on in the modern age.
