It’s the first account of the Civil War I’ve read that doesn’t portray the South as evil. Just matter of factly states the motivations and events affecting both sides. And amazing story telling on top of that.

I'm about a third of the way through my second reading of his History Of The Peloponnesian War; it is, as you may have surmised, a history of the Peloponnesian war.

Iliad, of course. I have never read any Horace though, going to add him to my deployment book list.

weird rec, but if you're digging into greek realpolitik, you might like this treatise from about the same period as thucydides on leading a city safely through a siege: http://penelope.uchicago.edu/Thayer/E/Roman/Texts/Aeneas_Tacticus/home.html

the term tends to refer to thinkers/ideas that base their understanding of politics on the fundamental nature of brutal force -- the strong do what they want, the weak suffer what they must. any other explanations, per realpolitik thinkers, is naive or otherwise fundamentally mistaken. machiavelli, hobbes, and thucydides tend to be the big exemplary figures.

normal politics, again per this view, aren't real because normies think that laws and morality matter. idiots.

sorry for jumping in, but for what it's worth, i think you'd get a lot out of thucydides. his accounts of historical facts are great, but the real takeaway from the work is the political theory that underlies how he explains events. the speeches especially are often rhetorical triumphs and offer a lot of fodder for thinking about politics more generally.

I read Roman history via Sallust and thought he was excellent, but my concern in a lot of ancient Greek history is that there will be a lot of facts and dates and wars, without the fleshing out necessary to give meaning to it. That's my view of a lot of Greek history looking back on it. I might have a different take today. I'll add it to the list, thank

Well, I'm rereading it because I read most of the classics in HS/early college and I generally did not get as much out of them as I think I ought to have. I'm enjoying it so far because the writing is decent and I enjoy history. There are plenty of political theory takeaways from it, but I'm not quite enough of a theorycel for those to be the main draw (though they're a good subtext for the whole thing).
