No

Tariffs are a good idea, it's just something you need to do gradually and with a lot of data behind them

If US diplomats make the case with binders full of actionable and specific trade complaints then any of these countries, even China, will acquiesce one on one. Trump's main thesis that we're getting taken by some of these countries and their protectionist policies is correct, especially in Asia. It can't be a sweeping rollout across the board though. Every country's case is different

We'll see. I am uncertain as well but the braying from the less savory portion of the left appears to be inaccurate and largely made in bad faith at this time.

Things like trade adjustments need to be done gradually and with good, individualized arguments made behind them. The domestic economy is doing fine. Consumer confidence seems average to good on the ground. A lot is still up in the air right now; we'll see where it lands.

Sensible protectionism is nationalism. Protectionist policies provide anti-fragile supports against the fickle vagaries of global trade flows and downturns in political relations between states. I'm not a full autarky sort of thinker (don't even think it's possible these days; that genie is already out of the bottle) but the NAFTA consensus and the mercenary banditry of our international corporations offshoring hundreds of thousands of manufacturing jobs was as anti-American as it was cruel to the working class of the nation.

If the global trade environment was completely without any protectionism, perhaps there'd be an argument to be made for dropping trade "borders". In reality where most of us live, you'll notice that most countries have sensible levels of protectionist measures up to keep some baseline of domestic production up and jobs within their respective nations.

They have tariffs to protect corporate special interests at the expense of the welfare of the population at large.

Working class doesn't benefit from tariffs. On balance they are materially worse off with them.

"Special interests" like long standing domestic firms, well-integrated into pillars of the communities that they serve. A fractional cost savings of .5% (which, of course, will likely be recaptured later by financiers and int'l trade broker corporations anyway) on allowing Nation TUV, unaccountable to national political leadership btw, to produce widget XYZ is not worth the upheaval that uprooting a company or its facilities will cause to the voter population---unless those politicians selling out the nation are on the take. Sensible protectionism "conserves" national industry and the domestic economy's "smoothness" (a very important facet in economics).

Look at the situation with China for an example of why some degree of protectionism in the 90s likely would have saved Americans from an immense amount of trouble today.

The cost of the 2018 steel tariffs was $900k per year per job saved. Consequently it cost 75k downstream jobs while saving 1,000.

"Pillars of the community" is hilarious because these firms have generally been moving production from the Rust Belt to the Southern US for decades for lower wages and less regulation.

He's still tariffing components that domestic electronics manufacturers need, while exempting electronics fully assembled by Apple in China
