I think its because the original discourse around the case was sort of ugly in that even Matt Walsh-type Republicans were like "Black men are disproportiotely violent killers look at this."
So the left got upset and then clung to the fact that the killer said it was self-defense (because it was all libs had). Remember libs have it in their minds that white people are just murdering black people every day with no reprecussions - so they think this guy was justified in his fear.
But yeah, pretty clear to anyone with half a brain that two kids talking shit at a track meet is not a self-defense scenario that permits stabbing someone with a knife.
