nothing wrong with combating blatant fascism
appealing to “but the rules” won’t work when your goal is to literally enslave people.

To be fair,
CR, we cannot allow fascism. Anything to stop it.
Also, it's very important for smart libs to be allowed to define what is and isn't "fascism." We can't let fascists start defining it for themselves!

To be fair,
This would work a lot better IMO if you guys hadn't just spend a few decades screaming about how Dubya was "Literally Hitler," Drumpfth was "an orange fascist" (who needed to be disqualified from ever being elected again by the judicial system), etc.
It almost seems like you guys might not actually be operating in good faith on this issue!

No, conservatives are the ones who just won in Germany. Pro-Russia/Nazi AfD are the ones who lost.

The legality of that depends on whether they fabricated the evidence that his bodyguard's militia was plotting a coup. The fact that, immediately after being arrested, the bodyguard put out a video calling for an armed uprising doesn't help his cause.

80% of U.S. law professors would support the same being done to Trump. Probably a majority of Dem-appointed judges too.

Romania Criminal Probe Puts Far-Right Candidate on Back Foot
Criminal charges for extremism upend Georgescu’s momentum
Romania rocked by November’s annulled presidential election
Romania’s far-right presidential candidate emerged defiant after hours of questioning by prosecutors this week, but an escalating criminal case could still derail his campaign.
Leaving the prosecutor’s office in downtown Bucharest to the cheers of supporters is the kind of moment where Calin Georgescu thrives, presenting himself as the victim of elite intrigue to a nation engulfed in an anti-establishment mood. Every move by the authorities against him has only increased Georgescu’s popularity, with polls showing he’s the frontrunner in May’s election.
But this week, Georgescu faced the biggest challenge to his momentum. On Wednesday, prosecutors brought six criminal charges against him for extremism and campaign irregularities. If found guilty, he could be imprisoned and barred from running again.
In an effort to demonstrate their strength, the far-right parties backing Georgescu organized a protest on Saturday, drawing tens of thousands of supporters to downtown Bucharest. Addressing the crowd, Georgescu said the recent charges against him are an attempt to prevent him from running for president.
Georgescu intends to submit his candidacy for the May ballot next week, according to AUR party leader George Simion, who helped gather the necessary signatures.
Before and during Georgescu’s questioning earlier in the week, prosecutors found stashes of cash, gold bars and illegal firearms they sayd belonged to mercenaries from the candidate’s security detail.
The stakes couldn’t have been higher. The fate of Georgescu’s bid will determine Romania’s position within the European Union and NATO and likely reverberate across the Atlantic, where US President Donald Trump’s administration has taken keen interest in his ability to run again.

A little-known figure in Romania’s ultranationalist scene, Georgescu shocked the Romanian establishment by winning the first round of last year’s presidential election. Security officials raised the alarm of foreign meddling, prompting the high court to annul the contest — a decision derided by many Trump allies and viewed negatively by most Romanians.
Yet this week’s developments could prove pivotal in shaping the outcome of the race, giving citizens an “informed view” of Georgescu, said Remus Stefureac, head of the pollster Inscop.
Stefureac said he expects a clearer view of trust levels toward Georgescu in coming weeks. The charges against the far-right politician may resonate with hardcore followers who view him as a victim, but the “dangerous weapons” shown by the probe could damage his standing with other voters, he said.
Georgescu is accused of having received extensive backing from a fascist organization amid fears of foreign meddling in his campaign. He’ll not only face restrictions on his movements but on his online activities, which were key for his surge in support last year. Due to extremism charges, he’s prohibited from posting fascist, racist, or xenophobic content.
Georgescu’s supporters have also come under scrutiny, with police raiding the properties of his campaign manager last month.
On Wednesday, prosecutors said weapons were uncovered on the premises of several mercenaries who’ve supported Georgescu, including those of Horatiu Potra, a former French Legionnaire. Police released images of $3.3 million in cash found in a hidden safe in Potra’s house, along with 25 kilograms (55 pounds) of gold.
Potra admitted to traveling to Moscow ahead of last year’s elections, but denied meeting any high-ranking Russian officials.
In a phone interview to Realitatea TV late on Wednesday, Potra also said he asked for funding in 2021 on behalf of Georgescu from a controversial Romanian-Australian mining tycoon Frank Timis, who refused to get involved.
Georgescu’s claim last year that he’d received no funding for his campaign was challenged by prosecutors, who charged him with providing false information and allege that he regularly met with Potra to receive cash.
On Friday, a Romanian court admitted the prosecutors’ request for a 30-day arrest of Potra and 18 other mercenaries, while two others were placed under house arrest. Potra, who denies the charges, and two others are missing and wanted by the police.
Restoring Confidence
The credibility of the investigation into Georgescu is a major test for Romanian institutions in restoring confidence in the rule of law. Its outcome will play a defining role in whether the top court could bar him from running again.
Former Constitutional Court President Augustin Zegrean told Bloomberg News that without a final court ruling that restricts his rights, Georgescu should be allowed to stand as a candidcate, saying it’s “up to the people to pick a president, not the judges.”
Still, judges barred far-right candidate Diana Sosoaca from running in last year’s presidential election for extremist and anti-democratic statements. That precedent means the top court’s judges may have to intervene if Georgescu’s candidacy is challenged, Zegrean said.

On Friday, Romania’s parliament also voted to dismiss Toni Grebla, head of the electoral authority, on grounds that he wrongfully increased his salary. Grebla, who denied the accusations, was responsible for monitoring candidates’ campaigns for violations of electoral law.
Romanian officials are also under more scrutiny since US Vice President JD Vance criticized them in a speech at the Munich Security Conference in February, calling the basis for annulling the vote “flimsy.” US billionaire Elon Musk, a close Trump ally, also criticized Bucharest, as have right-wing US influencers such as Mario Nawfal.
“Every step that the deep state makes, we are faster, more powerful and more dynamic,” Georgescu told Nawfal in an interview on Thursday. “I’m waiting for a hand of support from the top democracy in the world, which is the US.”
