S2 was too self important
S3 is funnier and has more of a soul already
Plus Parker poseys character is hilarious and I know several like her character IRL, she killed it

Goggins is a 180 actor when they give him something to do. But so far his character seems shittily conceived.
Parker Posey is no Jennifer Coolidge. She's playing her caricatured oblivious wasted southern lady with disgust (like Alec Baldwin's Trump) which takes the fun out of it.
Not looking forward to the fat black masseuse saving the day.

I think the goggins character will blossom. It's nice to see him in a dramatic role after his more eccentric parts in vice principals and righteous gemstones. The show has been careful to give us just enough about his character's temperament and background to make him mysterious and interesting IMO.
I'm a big parker posey fan so maybe i'm biased. It's possible the way she plays the part is specific to the character and not just a generic archetype. There are weird family dynamics, she's highly medicated and clearly unwell. I think this will come out more as the series progresses. The character may well be a contemptible person.
Def looking forward to wocwag the with masseuses.

I’ve known older rich, inebriated southern women that are like that, although Parker Posey makes it a little stranger. She’s from a small town in Mississippi and her family still lives there, so she has some basis for it at least. There was an article about her today:
As Posey read the “White Lotus” script, she told me: “I thought about all the things I love about the South. The drama.” Posey played a big Southern personality in HBO’s 2022 true-crime series “The Staircase,” but her role — as the lonely, boozing prosecutor Freda Black — was a variation of her standard type. Now she had been handed an opportunity to draw out the characters of the Southern women she had watched from afar all her life. She felt like an outsider as a teenager in Laurel, the hometown of Tennessee Williams’s Blanche DuBois, but she observed her town’s beauty queens and quarterbacks with such close attention, “it strengthened my compassion,” she once said. Though she ironed out her accent when she moved to New York, now she reveled in broad Southern cadences, “dramatic and funny at the same time”

Parker Posey is crushing it. She makes me LOL in every scene.
UNC chick is so hot.
I still can't get a hadle on Arnold's kid - i think he's a okay actor but his dialogue is pretty bad. He just seems off in a way none of the other characters do.
I also laughed when Gaitok forgot his gun. He's so fucking dumb.

What's the deal with Greg being able to chill at the White Lotus hotel after he fuckin killed Jennifer Coolidge. I really like the Greg actor by the way, perfect scumbag/divorced energy while also being menacing and maybe a little amateurish.
Is he part of some international criminal scam artist thing that operates out of White Lotuses. Also, why is him being in "land management" something they keep coming back to. Seems connected to the Goggins story where his dad was supposedly helping the locals out with a land issue.

Could be wrong but i think you're overthinking things.
He plotted some stuff against Tanya in Italy, presumably they questioned him a bit and he played the grieving widower, then peaced out to Thailand to avoid any more questions.
Italy probably didn't give a shit about some foreign tourist and no one else card about Tanya.
I think that's goig to be the arc of the Duke guy too. That family is going to decide to just never go back the US.

I thought this episode did the best i've ever seen at what drinking/partying is like.
There's sort of the fun of when everyone is initially getting wild, then the stupidity of when the law shrew took the last shot and slurs "SOMEONE HAD TO DO IT" and everyone cheers.
Then like an hour of random stupid dancing and weird shit, when everyone thinks they're being cool but they actually look really dumb.
Then there's the after party, when a third of the people are still tryig to hard to keep the party going, a third are just drunkenly blabbing stuff about their lives to others like a therapy session, and the last third has sobered up and is like "when teh fuck are these people leaving."
Also the final end when people drunkenly say goodbye to everyone and awkwardly hug each other like half whispering half tryig to get the other person to fuck them.

Anyone else think the brothers incest story is just sort of sad and off putting?
It just seems like its kind of a weird glib story line of two young kids creating scarring emotional trauma.

I rewatched the opening episode of this season and the shootout is a protracted gun fight with multiple different guns. The floating body appears to be one of the security staff.
You can hear Gaitok’s pistol in the mix, so very curious to see what the shooting turns out to be about. We know Walter Goggins character has a big gun and did not bring it to the meeting at the house in Bangkok, so presumably it goes back to the resort with him.

the actor playing Gaitok was Thai special forces:
Early life and education
Thapthimthong was born in West London, England,[2][6] to Thai parents.[7] He has a brother.[8]
At 13, he joined Combined Cadet Force, a youth training program run by the British Armed Forces.[7] He became interested in joining the military, but his parents wanted him to get a university degree, so he studied dance at Kingston University.[7]
Career
While at university, Thapthimthong worked as a nightclub bouncer.[2] Still determined to join the military as a Royal Marine, he trained with a family friend who had been in the Special Air Service, but did not qualify for medical reasons.[2][9]
After this disappointment, his parents encouraged him to visit his aunt and uncle in Thailand.[7] While there, Thapthimthong auditioned and was cast in the reality show Academy Fantasia (2013), eventually coming in as runner-up and landing a record deal.[7][2] Within a month, he landed his first acting role as Nung in Skin Trade (2014).[7][2]
After five years of minor roles in productions such as Farang (2017) and Netflix series Thai Cave Rescue (2022), Thapthimthong reevaluated his career choices and decided to join the Royal Thai Army.[7][8] He worked for the army's counter-terrorism team and spent time with the Armed Forces Security Centre, the Thai counterpart of MI6 or the CIA.[8]
Thapthimthong left the army three years later to take on more lucrative private security contracts.[7] As recently as January 2024, he did security for Thai-American hip-hop group Thaitanium.[2]
He was still working security when he was cast in the role of Gaitok in season three of the HBO series The White Lotus, which takes place in Thailand.[7] He credits his co-star Lisa, of the K-pop group Blackpink, for helping him perfect his Thai accent.[7][10]

the way the old guy kinda chuckled when he heard his mom's name indicated something like that. but we will probably never know, old man probably had a heart attack or something and died
duke dad - not sure. wouldn't be surprised if half the family stayed in Thailand, including the dad (mom and Saxon going back)
Gaitok is completely fucked, being led astray by Mook

Yeah. Watching the season finale there were times when i was like "this is great but would suck without this score" - and i mean no sarcasm behind that.

Loved this season but a couple improbable things:
- despite the tear inducing shrew monologue (not flame, I teared up, it was great), those chicks still secretly resent each other and I don't believe otherwise.
- Saxon crying to his dad about needing to be something and asking if his job was ok - the dad likely has tons of NC finance buddies who would gladly hire him if dad went to jail (fratty, outgoing Duke grad, likely smart, likely tons of professional contacts in NC) , he will be fine
- we never learned where Lochland was going to UNC or Duke
- seems like the sister bailed way too soon on the Buddhist shit - I get it was because of her brother wanting to go but come on
- Rick going back to the hotel owned by the literal powerful gangster he just assaulted in his home was kinda stupid. He should have had Chelsea leave immediately to come to Bangkok. Ridiculous that he would just go back when they knew he was staying there
- seems like Gaitok being Security Guard 1 for the owner was a bit far even though he was the hero of the resort. Seems like they would have just hired some more ex special ops Thai dudes
- Gaitok not turning in the Russians was kinda absurd. I guess it showed his "good soul" by believing the Russian yoga bros plea, but come on
- also ridiculous that the Russian dudes robbery plunder was just sitting out on a table in his slummy Thai apartment , presumably days after the theft
I loved the Laurie monologue though. The "seemingly outsider actually being the glue to the relationship" combined with that speech was really touching and probably some of the best writing and acting I can say I've seen in a while. She killed it

white lotus is all about exploring how everyone is nuanced. very flawed and unsympathetic people have good in them. very outwardly good and sympathetic people have profound flaws.
the shrew ending happens irl. their backbiting shrewishness will continue. the resolution isn't denying that, it's embracing that their friendship is worth it for them despite that. in a few years they'll go on another opulent vacation, have some other birdbrain meltdown that threatens their friendship, and end on "YAS I LOVE YA'LL QUEEN!" i've seen this countless times irl. it rings true.
the same with piper. so many privileged white shitlibs that talk about spirituality and the evilness of wealth and western society commit to being fighting the good fight only to back out immediately when faced with that reality or never try to begin with. the only unrealistic thing is that she actually admitted her flaws, in reality she would have made some excuse and continued preaching about spirituality while enjoying her family's wealth. this was essentially the rachel arc in season 1 and a lot of people didn't get it, so this time they spoon-fed it to the audience.
up until the finale my biggest criticism with this season was that the only unnuanced 100% good and likable character was belinda. and it also irked me that they were going with the magical working class nigress to fulfill that role. her arc ending doing *the exact same thing* tonya did to her the moment she got wealth was so fucking perfect and the set up was absolutely genius. amazing show, amazing season.
i still think season 1 is the best because i miss the humor and how the show didn't spoonfed as much stuff to the audience. but they are just really different. this one had a more serious tone, which was signaled right off the bat with the shootout. s1 >> s3 >>>> s2.

it was such a 180 moment overall. the breakdown over admitting her privilege wasn't just about spoon-feeding how superficial her principles were to the audience, it also was a twist that needed to smack tim in the face to push him further toward the murder-suicide attempt and excluding only lochner.
the plot and writing is 180. the acting really hammers it home. tim's stunned face, posey's thumbs up, and lochner's confusion.
also leading the audience to think loch had developed an incest kink and that's why he offered to stay and why piper had doubts was 180. did a great job as a red herring for loch really just being an empty vessel and adrift. spoon-fed to the audience with his "i'm a people pleaser" bit. this also made him becoming the victim of the poison significant too. what otherwise might have been a meaningless tragedy of "oh no only the good guy wound up dying" was made significant by him "seeing god."
the show not only does a great job showing how all people are flawed, superficial, and selfish, that they also grow and mature. it's soprano's tier where while everyone sucks there is a glimmer of hope even in tragedy. the ratliffs' lives are going to change and mature as a result of their disgrace and becoming poor. including loch, who would have otherwise not have been that impacted by it other than existing only to comfort them.
i hope loch makes an appearance in a future season. now that belinda has been exposed as being flawed despite being the only "100% good" character it would make sense to see loch mature and his selfishness come out in some way. would be great to see him working at next season's resort while on summer break from UNC (duke rescinded acceptance because of family disgrace or family couldn't afford it).
edit: just realized that the scene also showed that posey wasn't just some mindless wealthy pill junkie but someone who is observant and has great intuition. up until that point she served mostly as comic relief, and we were led think that her "stay just one night" ask was just her being stupid because the audience only saw piper as genuinely committed to a year of meditation, and we were even shown that the rooms and food weren't that bad as posey's describing them as "grim" just being spoiled and that certainly piper wouldn't abandon her principles as she should have expected that to be the accommodations or worse. people that see piper's twist as too sudden should consider whether the creators did that on purpose to show that the audience doesn't know these characters, and that the whole point is exposing people as nuanced and complex. it turns out that posey was right, and if we weren't so judgmental and sure we always know about people based on our limited POV, it's shouldn't shock the audience that piper's mom knew her way better than we did.
also, her "it would be offensive to waste it" is a straight up lifted tim dillon rant. the creator's must listen to him.

i have to rant about your other gripes
re: gaitok. his arc was about someone who up to then was 100% selfless killing someone purely for personal gain. rick was no longer a threat. there was an earlier scene about buddha permitting violence in self-defense. gaitok abandoned his ideals for purely selfish reasons. and becoming body guard #1 isn't improbable. the other guards were just thugs. sritala isn't some crime lord and just needed ordinary protection that is common in for the wealthy in third world countries. even jim had been out of the game for so long that he got along fine with just a couple hapless thugs.
re: saxon. yeah, he'll be fine. his fretting about that was showing how much his success and image mattered to him. all the ratliff kids will be fine. saxon not stoically accepting his fate (hey, they episode is even named amor fati!) and having faith he'll get through it was the point. and very human and probable, few stoically accept shit like that without fretting about their life being ruined.
re: rick. they had the scene at the beginning showing he was safe at the hotel. that was meant to help the suspension of disbelief. he was fine, and it turned out to be totally rational for him to go back to the hotel because he calculated that jim wouldn't retaliate. and he was right.
re: improbability generally. if i pitched you a script about a kid with no military or survival training killing a CEO on the streets of manhattan, escaping the state without any clue to his identity, only to be caught eating at mcdonald's carrying all the evidence of his crime, you would tell me that that's improbable but for the fact it just happened last year. dumb criminals do leave their plunder on their dressers. improbable things happen -- that's why they're improbable, not impossible. all of this stuff made sense and wasn't wildly fantastical, especially in the context of a drama that requires some suspension of disbelief.
the most improbable thing is that all of these people would undergo so much development on a short vacation. but that's the nature of fiction and we are prepared to accept condescending multiple profound character development arcs into an opulent vacation when 99.9% of the time they would just sit around relaxing. but you can't accept that some dumb criminals left stolen goods on their dresser when i could find dozens of cases in westlaw where the happened IRL?
