This is their curt statement on his passing while FanDuel and DraftKings dominate sports right now. Give me a break, they treat this guy like a fucking criminal. RIP to a legend.

"Major League Baseball extends its deepest condolences to Pete Rose's family, his friends across the game, and the fans of his hometown of Cincinnati, Philadelphia and beyond who admired his greatness, grit and determination on the field of play. May he rest in peace," MLB said in a statement.

he was a retard who forced their hand by lying and making a scene by showing up to cooperstown during the induction ceremonies. if he was more graceful i don't think it's out of the question he gets voted into the HOF by the veterans' committee. his ban doesn't preclude him from the HOF and there are just a couple faggy sportswriters who might've voted no. otherwise just players and execs who would've outweighed them.

i don't think he had malicious intent but he was too dumb to get out of his own way.

it's a shame because he was a 180 baseball personality and was great on fox with arod and frank thomas.

he would've been a manager until he couldn't walk anymore and would've given us more ridiculous moments than lou piniella or billy martin ever could.

Amazing combo of pure charisma and baseball-induced autism. Any time a 70s pitcher got into the HOF, he'd give interviews and be like "Hoyt Wilhelm?? I wore his ass out. Went 171 for 396 lifetime, 92 doubles, he'd throw his slider down and away and I just zipped it down the line every time. Shoot if I'd really wanted to make some money I'd a bet on going 2 for 4 any time he pitched"

Recent 4-part doc on HBO I think is 180 billion. Basically says there could have been a path to reconciliation with Giamatti but that old chain smoking bastard died. Then he kept thinking he could bully Selig, Rose began acting out and could never stay out of his own way and would always humiliate himself every so often. Plus he and Johnny Bench have hated each other since the 70s, so Bench worked against him even though other Reds supported him. Oh and the HOF could admit him without baseball reinstating him but were too big of pussies.

He's very clearly a total degen liar but who cares, he's an American original and it's fucking bullshit he didn't get in while alive.

The MLB ban was justified, but as someone upthread said, that doesn't mean the Hall couldn't have inducted him anyway. Different entity and they have many people in there who were unaffiliated with MLB (e.g. negro leaguers). He should be in the Hall (in which case, Joe Jackson should be as well).

The argument that what he did is no worse than the wife beaters, alkis, racists, etc. in the Hall is not really on point. Betting on games you are involved in is automatic ban because the sport would die if people came to think outcomes were predetermined due to people throwing games, etc. In every MLB locker room there is a reminder-- don't bet on games.

Still affects outcome and potentially hurts the team. Maybe you keep a pitcher in longer and end up causing dead-arm. Managers manage differently in June than in October because it is a long season.

The rule is simple-- don't bet on games you are involved in. Pete, being a degenerate gambler, couldn't resist breaking it. Probably because he believed it benefitted him (not the team) in some way.

He was a great player and had a great, entertaining personality. Even so, a lifetime ban and keeping him out of the hall of fame was fitting for a guy who was betting on his own baseball team.

By the way, the post-ban Mattered. Of contrition and being forthcoming was irrelevant. What he did while he was still a player and manager is what mattered.

MLB has a very long and fraught relationship with gambling. It's basically the sole red line infraction they have. Roids, violence, drugs, etc., people come back from. Gambling is a no go.

Look at the very beginnings of the game - it was a rampant issue that nearly halted the sport's advancement. Ken Burns covers this very well in "Baseball".

Of course now you can wager from your seat so we are in a different scenario. But gambling on your own team is bananas.

I also think he got more personal mileage, satisfaction and prestige from being the villain than being in the HOF and, deep down, wouldn't have changed a thing.
