Completely obliterated our country's manufacturing base and gutted the US middle class in favor of higher corporate profits, making Chinese peasants richer, and cheap shitty imported products

In return China steals all our IP and builds up their military for the inevitable conflict vs America down the line

$80B trade deficit with China in 2000. More than tripled by 2010. Is now $344B

NAFTA and this pretty much ensured the destruction of most American manufacturing and thus the middle class

Now the country is financial leeching, healthcare leeching, tech leeching, and poors buying cheap chinese electronics and shit at retail, increasingly online, on their credit cards

Clinton was a New Democrat, which basically meant he was a corporatist who relied on minorities and poors to get elected instead of middle class and wealthy Americans like Republicans. Most of what he did was directed at helping corporate America. Unfortunately corporations are not socially or geographically beholden to the US.

You might be surprised to learn that it was all done by design. Back in the 90s, the predominant view was that the country would be better off getting rid of “dirty” industries and manufacuring and focuses on higher calue services industries, like finance, consulting, tech, etc. People ignored the stupidity of it. Now, we have services jobs, but many of them are undesirable. We also have an emerging underclass.

All these corporations back in the day licking their chops at tapping that vast Chinese market, only to see China completely close down the country to foreign / US companies in favor of domestic champions

Fucking imbeciles. I fucking remember Walmart thinking they would take over China

Trade partners could more easily block imports or levy high tariffs vs. allowing their countries to be flooded by cheap government funded steel, etc.

if we were dealing this china PNTR (WTO) question today, the entire thing would be the media acting as if anyone who opposes it is a racist (together with "scandal" painting something trump said about the chinese at some point is horribly offensive). there were lies but at least back then they were more or less the product of good faith debate, rather than personal attack bullshit
