Unfortunately, when i saw Gatormo's giveaway thread, I had no experience with crypto and I had to scramble to download bitcoin Core in order to get a wallet; little did I know it was completely obsolete technology evem at the time and you actually had to download the entire block chain to view your own wallet. My computer kept crashing.

So I never even verified that there was a btc there. This was back in 2014.

Fast forward almost 10 years. All i have from that day is a ".dat" file, which opens in Notepad, and whose contents is complete gibberish. BTC is trading at 60k. I contact a small number of tech professionals including one CTO who is involved in crypto. The answer I get from everyone: "We can't help. You're SOL."

Now, having already given the fucking .Dat file to at least one person, and not knowing if I'd been robbed or if there ever even was a bitcoin to begin with, (edit: actually by this point I was able to find the btc address in the gibberish code, and searched in on bitcoin Explorer and found there actually was 1.0 BTC there- incredible, thanks Gatormo!) I contact a high school friend (my only one) who ended up, in 2015 or so, founding a crypto company, and tell him the story. "Send me the file" he says. "And give me a new wallet address I can send it to when I'm done."

I kid you not. The next day he calls me. "Check your wallet." Sure enough, it was there. Amazing.
