but taking the purist capitalist approach that "people solve their own problems" assumes that there are no bad actors in the world (corporate or otherwise) and that everyone has an inherently equal chance of enjoying the "happy life" you describe. so this is where our opinions diverge, for two reasons: 1/ the reality that capitalism has many rough edges that require softening so as not to create the types of extreme equality that inspire revolution and 2/ that, fundamentally, i'm of the belief that everyone should be entitled to enjoy those "basic things" such as food, education, health care and a roof over their head, and that a society in which prosperity comes not at the expense of the state but rather at the expense of the majority of the population is a fundamentally deficient society.
