I inherited him and don't know his exact age, but he's at least 17. Lately he's been fine except he doesn't want to get up and move a lot, and I know it's arthritis because he's got no other health issues. The winter weather must be doing a number on his ass. Right now he looks ready to die but otherwise fine.

Since food has gotten better, cats live longer now. Basically we were killing them by not giving them enough meat.

Cats are pretty resilient. Get some Glucosamine and Chondroitin supplement. Also make sure the cat is getting good food. The cheap shit with wheat is terrible for cats. Also, a heating pad/bed is helpful. Beyond that go to steroids and/or pain meds. Some combo of those things will have the cat back to being a lot more mobile and costs very little.

The rabies vaccines fuck them up when they are old. They used to be good for 10 years, now vets require them to be vaxxed every THREE years before they will even see the animal. I watched one old cat nosedive within days of getting vaxxed, and I had to put him down just a few weeks later. It was awful.

This one also just got vaxxed for the same fucking reason. I knew if I took him in to be put down, they would refuse to take him if his vaxx records aren't current. I had to get him vaxxed simply so that I can have him put down within the next three years, and a month later he barely moves and needs me to carry him to the food bowl. I miss scooping his shit already.

let him live, keep looking after him (sounds like you are doing that well), enjoy his company

Tbh I'm thinking about starving him a bit because he's getting fat for the first time in his life. I would have to make sure he stays hydrated, but he needs to lose weight

nothing wrong with making sure he keeps his weight under control, that is as important for cats and dogs as it is for humans, but do it slowly and gently, don't put the old dude under physical stress by imposing rapid weight loss (also you would confuse and mentally distress him), just cut back on the rations a little at the margins, and cut back on the non-protein stuff but keep the protein up

Caught him drinking out of the water bowl for the first time ever. For some reason, this cat would only ever drink water when he was 100% sure no one would see or hear him do it. But tonight, for the first time ever he drank water while I was standing right there. He even had his back to me. Sad shit.
