This is my second bar (the first was in a different state a few years ago), and I didn't bother studying more than about 3 hours because I don't really want to keep practicing law all that much. I probably cut it pretty close.

I'm debating whether to try this. There is a state in which I'd like to be admitted, but I have no desire to study for the bar exam.

It's pretty expensive to register for a bar though. Would someone else be paying for you to take it?

no, but money isn't the issue. and if i were to take it and pass, i'd probably go inactive in one of the other states where i'm already admitted.

I passed 2 bars so far without really doing it hardcore style.

First of all, I never took a bar review course. I studied for one bar abroad with a micromash set.

I studied for another one with used barbri books I bought and I worked full time up until a week and a half before the exam.

Passed each state.

Spending 2 months taking a barbri class and not working is undeniably overkill.

Barbri definitely seems like a waste, though the mini review book seemed useful to look over.

probably two of those states that only test the 6 mbe subjects? for those states it doesn't seem like you need that much time considering there shouldn't really be anything new on it...all review

I did this. Mind you, it wasn't in a state with a hard exam (like NY or CA), but my state's not easy either.

Somehow I passed, but it must have been just barely, and the stress while waiting for the results wasn't worth it. I got hooked on Valium during those next few months, no joke.

That was the best thing about Barbri. I knew I passed that fucker by a mile and never gave it a minute of worry after the exam.

If you get even one point over the minimum passing score, you studied too hard, dood. Remember, the bar is a test of minimum competence.

There's a story about Joe Jamail doing this. He was drinking with some buddies his 2L year and he bet them he could pass the bar. They took him up on it, and he sat for the bar his 2L year.

Got his results back, he went to the bar w/said buddies, opened the results. Results said he passed by one point.

Looked at his buddies and said "well, guess I studied too hard."

So when Joe Jamail was in school, Texas let you sit for the bar without a degree?

that's also true now. you can take the bar exam before you get your degree. you still have to get your degree to be admitted though.

How difficult is the TX bar exam relative to NY, CA, IL, VA, PA, FL, etc.?

not sure. only took the TX bar. pass rate isn't that bad (~80% for the state), but then again TX doesn't have a shitton of unaccredited law schools like CA (which lowers the passage rate). The essay portion is a bitch (there are somewhere around 19 subjects that are tested).

I studied for two weeks. My MBE score was higher than most of the testimonial results provided by PMBR at the time.
