Here’s a good summary:
All this machinery making modern music
Can still be open-hearted
Not so coldly charted, it's really just a question of your honesty
Yeah, your honesty
One likes to believe in the freedom of music
But glittering prizes and endless compromises
Shatter the illusion of integrity, yeah

I think you all underestimate how appealing this will be and how it will change the economics of publishing v live performance. I love/follow Rick Beato on multiple platforms, but this take is effectively a boomer lamenting that the internet blew up music publishing, which it true but it’s also a thing that happened 25 years ago. The reason we haven’t moved past it is that the same boomers who saw their milkshakes slurped down by autistic SV tech nerds are still the captains of the music industry and have had zero ideas about how to respond. The constituencies that get screwed by this are the artists, who have always been super easy to exploit and were never going to be a functional corrective force on their own, and consumers who get shittier and shittier new music, but so far are happy to accept the trade off to have instant and extremely convenient access to the rest of the labels’ entire catalogs ie they value the potential for better new music much less than the ability to avoid the effort it used to take to build a music collection.

And this is only going to get exponentially better and more authentic
But yeah there will always be an appreciation for rocks bands like Tool going into the studio and fighting it out with each other until they create a perfect product. It’s just going to become a lost art for the most part

the barrier to entry to make professional quality recordings is insanely low now. a $500 home studio setup in 2024 is on par with $500k worth of studio gear in 1991. yet, no one knows how to write an actual pop hook anymore. it's all so bland and characterless.
the Pet Shop Boys guy was right. Taylor Swift doesn't have one hummable tune.
