The real crash will come whenever the overall bubble of financing our entire nation with hot checks comes crashing down. That will most likely happen in the same time frame - a few years from now - when the bankruptcy of Social Security becomes too imminent to ignore.

I've always said that Social Security's pending fiscal cliff will be the cause for the big crash. The real uncertainty is how close we get to the cliff before it becomes obvious to everyone and they start screaming.
Right now both Republicans and Democrats are playing a game of chicken in which they both know that we are driving off a cliff but they are telling each other "I ain't gonna be the first one to say anything." That will only work for so long and at some point in the new few years it will be obvious to everyone.
That's when politics in this country will get REALLY interesting.

I've read reports that say that both Democrats and Republicans in Congress secretly concede that the Social Security retirement age will eventually have to be raised to 67, they just want the other side to take the blame for it. So they seem to think Social Security is unaffordable as is.
No doubt you're correct about Medicare/Medicaid being something they will cut more severely than Social Security though.
