On Guadalcanal, our mission continues.
The DPAA team is on the ground in the Solomon Islands, working tirelessly to locate and recover the remains of more than 5,500 American service members still missing from WWII. Our Indo-Pacific Directorate recently visited an active recovery site, met with local leaders, and strengthened our partnership with the Solomon Islands National Museum.
We are deeply grateful for the support as we work to bring every hero home. #WWII #MIA #YouAreNotForgotten U.S. Embassy - Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea

Most of the MIA were the now forgotten USN sailors lost in the numerous naval battles during the Guadalcanal campaign. For example, the forward quarter of USS New Orleans with all the men of Turret #1 is still lying at the bottom of Ironbottom Sound. Nobody wants to ever talk about the USN KIA/MIA from the 6 months of the Guadalcanal campaign. Far more of them (~5,500) died than the Marines (1,600) on Guadalcanal.
