Because of the Emperor getting involved in Console affairs. Sony was also extremely adept at consumer electronics writ large and their advertising budget was at least 20x Nintendo’s. Zoomers don’t know and many here don’t remember but the CD itself was seen as a very cool piece of technology in the 90s. Then you had FMVs for Commercials.
Also millennials are the big gaming gen but younger millennials didn’t consciously want SNES, it just appeared one day. PS1 gen was the first gen where they were the target demographic. Millennials aren’t automatically glued to Nintendo. Genesis Won in the U.S. iirc or tied iirc.
Btw N64 basically won the western hemisphere or it was close enough. Actually they lost but it wasn’t by 3:1 or something. Nintendo had momentum in the west until OOT and then in 99-01 no one bought an N64 or its games so Sony ran up the score. That was a long as fuck 3 years where Sony just ran up the score. No shitcube until after 9/11. Circa 1997 n64 was on pace to Tie in the U.S. imo.
