My grades are shit, around 3.0 for both UG and law.
Haven't taken GMAT yet, so we'll see after that.
I want to get a financial analyst type position at a gov't or nonprofit entity

You have a JD? Why are you considering the MBA and what schools are you considering?
I don't want to do the jobs that a lot of MBA grads seem to covet, like I-banking or upper Management at F500s.
But I've met quite a bit of people with finance related positions at nonprofit entities, which seems like the ideal job for me, and a lot of them had MBAs, which was surprising

I don't have quantitative background, so either may be difficult.
I am very specific in the kind of job that I'd like, which is a financial analyst position at a government entity or university. I thought these people would have accounting backgrounds, but all the people I've met have had MBAs, so I figured that might help.
If there is a way I can get a position like that without an MBA, I am definitely all ears

"If you can't find a gig now, an MBA won't help."
These comments are dead on.
You are failing to realize that what you need right now is work experience relevant to whatever you want to be/wherever you want to be.
The ONLY way an MBA will act has a vehicle to get you to where you want is if you got Top 5 (or at best, Top 10 ONLY). The pedigree and name alone of these programs will enable you to be perceived as a very smart, diverse candidate.
However, if you go to a Non-Top 10 school, you will be perceived as a flake with no clear/defined career arc and focus.
Of course, this isn't a fair assessment on the part of hiring managers. But this is the name of the game. Just like in law: those who get non-law jobs are always the Top 14 people; they are perceived as worthy of getting their foot in the door for an interview because there is a presumed degree of high intellect by virtue of having Duke, Penn, Harvard, etc. Law School on the resume. Thus, there is a presumption that they can learn the job.
You NEED to get work experience in whatever sector you want to end up in...then after 2-3 years, go for an MBA. Otherwise, you will just be wasting more money.
