the traditional labor practice at my current firm depends on one guy, which is obviously concerning, and all i'll ever be here is his service partner. good thing about my experience here is that the guy literally does not practice law anymore, apart from a few CBA negotiations every year, so i did everything first chair starting in 2018 when i made partner. i have a shit ton of experience negotiating CBAs and trying NLRB cases. |

at my current job, the travel (pre-pandemic) was totally nuts. at least 3 overnights a week, and i had a few weeks where i left monday and came back friday night. given that i was spiraling due to addiction, this contributed heavily to the dissolution of my marriage (which i am now getting back on track). however, i was left completely alone and once i realized in 2019 that i wasn't going to get anywhere at the firm i started billing like 1700 a year and nobody said shit.
new firm has offices everywhere. there will be travel, but probably not nearly as much. when i was there as an associate, i took 3 trips total in 3 years. however, i am sure i'll be billing well over 2000 a year now. but that's fine, as it wasn't a problem for me when i was an associate (both there and at current firm), and i know i am going to advance. |

actually, somewhat related: the girl i referred to above (was my ex at the time) was friends with the bmore skins and she made calls to them to smooth things over and it worked. i appreciated that a lot, because i couldn't go to shows for a few months. in fact, this band Despair (singer of Terror) played the same place a little bit after that incident, and the bassist came up to me and said "dude, you should probably go. these skinheads are talking about killing you in the parking lot." i got the fuck out of there immediately.
if anyone here knows anyone from DC/maryland/NOVA who was involved in the hardcore scene in the late 90s, they will know about this. it became part of local scene lore for many years.
also, in around 2010 i went to this club called the otto bar in baltimore, and this guy twinkie (hugely fat skin who was a main driver behind these plans to murder me) was working the door. as i was going in, he said "don't mace me bro!" and we laughed and shook hands. we have become friendly since. |

at one point my friend sean made this dude noah's (he sang for dead end boys and was a notorious tough guy) face look like hamburger meat, it was something to behold. people throughout the scene were talking about how the bowie kids (i am from bowie, md) really held their own against the baltimore skins. |

do you know the band Desperate Measures? they were huge in the late 90s/early 2000s. their singer ryan is my best friend. he and steve have known each other since grade school. for a fairly isolated dc suburb, bowie had a really big hardcore scene - at its peak in like 1994/5, bowie high had like 15 legit hardcore kids, and like 30 or so that you could count on seeing at local hardcore and punk shows. |

i moved out of bowie in 1999, and my god it turned after that. it is now nearly 100% black. amazing sea change happened in a few years.

the two partners i worked with most when i was here before (and who were the driving force behind getting me back) made 880k and 1.2m last year. i'm hoping to be well above 500k in a few years. this is probably as good an outcome as one could have as a traditional labor lawyer. |

i left to go back to an L&E boutique because i was lied to about equity partnership prospects. spaceporn got me fired from there.
now i am at a midlaw firm and they took me in as an equity partner. i basically run the labor practice (because it's just me an associate lol) and should make close to $500k this year. can't complain. |
