The PHS officers were like a labor pool, though once you got assigned you tended to stay there unless there was a reorg or you asked for a transfer. In most places you worked alongside GS people. It was actually a decent job. My former next door neighbor was an anesthesiologist who quit his hospital job and took a PHS commission with the Indian Health Service. He went from Chicago to New Mexico and left the enormous Mrs munching on bon bons. The medical people get all kinds bonuses and pay supplements for which engineers are not eligible. They all get 100% disabled, veddy odd case. They are making 5k+ a month, actually the dudes who also have pensions were bragging they "made" 900k in 10 years from their pensions. On top of that they have fed gov preference so they go work in a fed jerb as GS 12/13 and then after X years they can retire with a 2nd pensions. AND one claimed they still qualify for social security benefits.

save the VA system for those with actual veteran needs like prosthetics, PTSD help, etc |
