Seems ief shouldn't drop any more as further rate increase affects mortgage rates. So it's much safer than longer term tlt. But it is only yielding 4% now, not 5... I get 12% in strc

The 'yield' you are looking at is probably the TTM yield, FWD yield should be much higher.

(also LOL at STRC).

latest div $0.332 x 12 / $88.75 = 4.49% and it will rise as IEF rotates into newer bonds. And you're comparing one of the safetest asset classes to what is essentially a junk bond.

Thoughts on Google 6.2% bonds? If I buy one at 94 it says it yields 6.5%. Does it mean it will pay me monthly? Either way 6.5% is kinda low..

You’re looking at the Coupon, n00b. YTM tells you the effective yield as derived from the discount (or premium) on the Bond principal.

Fuckin’ amateurs.

So if I wanted to get the current 10yr yield, ief doesn't do it, because they're still invested in old treasuries and only yield 4%. The only way ief yields 5% is if its principle drops further as rates go up to 6%, otherwise it is several years behind.

Bond funds are universally SHIT my friend. But also you shouldn't buy 10 year bonds directly. If you want good bond yield fastly while not fucking yourself too bad later, just go to treasurydirect and every 6 weeks buy a new 6 month TSY in equal chunks. While waiting to buy new chunks, buy and roll 4 week TSYs

I don't want to hold longterm, and treasurydirect you cannot sell... IEF currently doesn't yield much more than sgov and I can sell sgov any momemnt.. ief seems an inferior product compared to Google bond (6.5%)

(me since 2022 as the market is up 60%)

to be fair, i did deploy about 25% of my cash during the April 2024 tariff thing so that helps juice my short term return since then, but im still largely cash so im basically matched the market for 2 years and still missed out on 50% more returns :(

chatgpt:

For much of roughly 2000–2020, the world generated an unusually large amount of savings relative to the amount of attractive investment demanding that money.

Bernanke's original savings-glut argument focused heavily on excess savings from emerging economies—particularly Asia—and oil exporters flowing into developed-country financial assets. That increased the supply of capital and pushed equilibrium real interest rates downward.

Governments aren't saving anymore. They're competing aggressively for capital.

The IMF estimates global public debt was just under 94% of GDP in 2025 and could reach 100% by 2029. Defense, aging populations/social spending, strategic industrial policy and rising interest expense are all increasing financing requirements.

The supply of savings relative to the rapidly increasing demand for capital has become considerably less abundant.

Is 6.5% Corp bond yield a good idea? Also if it is well below par, i.e. longterm goog or amzn at 2% then most of the profit would be cap gains instead of ordinary tax
