Subject: Got a B in Con Law - How Screwed?

My GPA dropped to a 3.82 at Virginia. Can I still find a job?

it's extremely unlikely that you'll get any interviews because of pre-screening. firms see conlaw as a strong indicator of your legal ability. start networking hard now. focus on doc review agencies and personal injury firms in the charlottesville area. you might have to suck a few dicks and eat chef boyardee for a few years to pay rent, but eventually you'll make it if you believe in yourself

particularly in con law, which strongly parallels the tasks you will be performing in practice. firms see a B in con law as strongly indicative that a candidate does not have the requisite legal talent to perform at the high level they desire

Not really. You have to mess up pretty bad to get a C. You should get a B+ just by doing minimal work.

that's ridiculous. It's a *CURVE*, so even if you work your ass off, if you worked less than 85-90% of everyone else, you can get a B or B- easily. All the grade shows is that you worked less than most everyone else, not that you did "minimal" work.

You can easily rebound by taking Fed Courts, Admin, Evidence, and CrimInvest and getting As or A-s -- shows the B in ConLaw was a fluke.

If you're working less than 85-90% of people in your class, that is below minimum. This is not some theoretical concept... IRL at UVA, if you are in the bottom 15% in terms of amount of work, you're doing almost nothing.

In addition, if this person's GPA was brought down to a 3.82 (obvious flame but let's go with thehypo) it means he's a smart fucking dood, meaning he had to work even LESS in order to end up below median. Someone with a near 4.0 but for one B grade pretty much shows he was in te bottom 5% or so of people in the class in terms of work level.

But thanks for highlighting that this is a *CURVE*

This post marks you as someone who obviously doesn't go to UVA and therefore needs to shut the fuck up. Profs can create whatever curve they want as long as it adheres to a 3.3 mean, and most create curves where the vast majority of students get B+s. It is a rare professor at UVA who give 30-40% B and B-, and certainly no one is "slated" for that percentage.

AT UVA, most profs have extremely fat curves. Upwards of 80% of the class will get a B+, so you really have to be in the bottom 10% to do worse than that. Not true for all classes, but the grade sdistributions are public so you can go look to see which classes you needto focus on and make sure you're in the top half.

One profexplained to me that to get below a B- in his class you have to unlearn things you knew before his class.

The only thing worse than this is getting a B in International Law-- an up-and-coming field that many firms also place a large emphasis on. I suggest you find your school's version of I-Law, sign up for it now, and work your ass of in it!
