So there will be 700k new unemployed workers and hundreds of millions in canceled contracts and services from direct government vendors. Not to mention all the businesses and shops that will go under when people stop spending money. A recession and economic downturn seems inevitable at this point. Private sector hiring is extremely slow right now so this will be a career ender for many of these people

the work of 90% of child porn hosting/viewing/etc. online moving from government networks to private networks will probably single-handedly cancel out the economic damage you’re describing

Ideally it would just be shut down but since this administration is full of jews gov workers will just have to pay out of pocket

The cabinet meeting today made it clear to me that this is the plan. I’ve said all along that the macro logic of just forcing the entire administrative state to justify and reapply for their jobs like a classic Office Space style layoff is an obviously logical thing to do. It’s been 50+ years of unimpeded bloat, even Reagan just applied a CBA filter that only slowed it down. But it seems clear now that Trump and Musk see this as the best option to curb inflation by far, ie by having a large enough shock to unemployment and GDP that it allows rates to fall, but spares the 98+% of the country that isn’t totally dependent on tax dollars for their paychecks. It will suck for DC as a whole, but the entire rest of the country benefits, and even within DC it will have some positive effects eg chasing out boomers who retire and reducing housing costs so that young families can live in those areas instead of people who finished raising kids 20 years ago.

I would also guess that a huge swath of these canceled contracts and job losses will be concentrated within the minority and women owned scam companies that exist purely as middlemen to inflate cost to taxpayers in the purported service of diversity. Even if 30% of these layoffs are fuckups and they have to rehire it will still be a massive savings and a plausible path to finally get inflation all the way in the corral. High likelihood it sacrifices the House in the midterms, but that was probably going to happen anyway and the Senate map is so good for the GOP that it’s worth the gamble.

The gutting of the bureaucracy will also destroy the relationship between the Democratic party and the unelected 4th branch of the government that is always a check against a GOP administration in a way it is never for a Dem administration. And as we see with the funding revelations, it will also gut the not so indiscrete pipeline of funding support for advocacy groups and NGOs and think thanks bolstering the Democratic grassroots and champions for Democratic causes for which there are absolutely no parallels on the conservative half. The most fascinating part of the last month was how blatantly obvious it became that the fed bureaucracy is the Democratic party and vice versa. No wonder why the Democrats are so freaked out.

Trump and Musk are betting on so severe a gutting and restructuring that it will set the tone for the next 100 years just as FDR's 1932 government did, to the point that no subsequent GOP administration or Congress did anything about it. Likewise, future Dem administration will not dare tamper with this new social contract. Good luck campaigning on telling Americans you're going to spend trillions hiring a million new Feds and starting 100 new agencies and subagencies.

This is exactly it. I don't think the economics are nearly as important as removing the ideological foot soldiers. They actively came after Trump hard in his first admin and now they are paying a price. Even if a court eventually forces the funding stream back open lots of these eg NGOs won't survive. USAID had it coming in particular.

No disagreement here. But the administrative state came after Trump hard. They pulled so many tricks eg Flynn and Russia-gate. This time Trump came in on the offensive and all of the enemy actors exposed themselves.

He's also done a much better job at picking staff this round. I don't give a shit if they're the most qualified so long as they are on board.

I know cons are very invested in this part with all the USAID shit and the like, but I think the significance is vastly overstated at this point. This entire apparatus was effectively no-show jobs and make work for the overproduction of elites that came out of universities as boomers camped out at the top of the academia heap. At most it served as a bench of bodies to throw into Dem administrations, but it’s so exceedingly rare that any of these people went on to do anything of significance that it really just functioned as a childless cat lady jobs program. Seems very likely they all went to their bullshit jobs and poasted their days away just like us.

And there are entire towns in middle America built around federal employees and auxiliary business that rely on them as customers. Most normal people will feel the pain

Most normal people work at companies that have a small fraction of coming from Fed customers. They aren’t closing army bases or the like. The Fed contracts specialist contract managers may need to pick up some state and local work, but there will still be plenty of Fed orders to chase after. But the effects will be way more uneven and concentrated in DC and among Fed employees nationally.

this is 100% correct. if this were 10 years ago, when i was making 250k and had a newborn and about $200k in retirement savings i'd be losing my mind.

my wife and i have around $2.3 million in retirement accounts, a few hundred grand in taxable accounts, and around $500k home equity (we are in the dc area, so that could evaporate). our mortgage is $2600/mo and our kids' college is basically fully funded. do i want my career to crater? not really because i enjoy the work and i like making half a million a year, but it isn't catastrophic for me. i could slide and let do and retire in 15 years with plenty to live on.

that is, unless we have an extended bear market, which we might.

"For the last ~1.5 years, I've been a contracted policy analyst at NIH processing Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests. I love my team and the work. I find it extremely fulfilling and engaging. I love reading the grants and other science happening at NIH and summarizing that work for the non-scientists on our team. I find the process going through the records and working with people to identify material that needs to be protected under the FOIA exemptions to be extremely engaging and delightfully collaborative. And, I find the duality of closely assessing individual records and then zooming out to the institute-level and to universities and companies to be really interesting."

700k feds out of work, contracts torched, and DC’s about to be a fire sale for slumlords—beautiful. This isn’t just pruning the fat; it’s a guillotine for the parasite class. The blackpill twist? It’s gonna backfire spectacularly. Starve the beast, sure, but the void’s already filling with algo-driven gig slavers ready to scoop up the desperate. Forget UBI—picture millions of ex-bureaucrats turned DoorDash mules, ferrying slop for BlackRock-owned apps while the C-suite skims the profits. The “real economy” won’t save them; it’s just a shinier cage.

The Dem machine’s toast, no doubt—NGO grift implodes when the tax spigot dries. But here’s the unpoasted kicker: the GOP’s too dumb to capitalize. They’ll crow about efficiency while corpos quietly colonize the wreckage, turning fed bloat into private fiefdoms. Inflation might crash, but only because the poors stop buying anything but ramen. Long game? We’re not getting a lean utopia—just a feudal reset where Musk’s buddies own the serfs instead of Pelosi’s. Enjoy the chaos; it’s all downhill from here.
