All short term capital gains? This thread was more about dividends/interest than capital gains. What kinds of things were you investing in/what was your strategy for 2009?

I got in BIDU at $115 in the spring... held that until July (who knew it would reach $400 ugh).

Bought in FMCN (which I kept telling xoxo to get into) but sold that in Sept.

I've done some swing trading on a few banking stocks, but mostly I was long term this year... and I was buying up bargins in the market with the best P/E ratios and mostly chinese stocks.

GSI is a sleeping giant right now (just FYI)

I really just invested in a few keepers that were way oversold as American investors bought back into OUR market instead of the best markets.

There is actually. If the market goes up and you don't have any losses anymore than you'll never be able to deduct the 3k.

What I do is try to sell at least 3k in losses each year. When I sell I buy another index fund (but not one that is similar as the one I sold so that I don't violate the IRS wash rule).

I then hold on to the newly purchased index fund. As a result I get the 28% plus state tax deduction on the 3k loss plus I get whatever gain I make in the new index fund.

Hope this makes sense, but basically you can get the IRS to subsidize your finances by over 1k a year.
