Tldr it was trash. I hated it. Not that it didn't have a few good moments but it's down so far from the first season. Complete channel drift. It became a mid tier soap opera.
A lot of these characters are a rehash of nearly similar characters from the first season. I'm not going to remember any of this in a year. I thought season 1 was breathtakingly original, season 2 was a slight drop-off but still deserves credit. Season 3 was incredibly boring throughout. Nothing new, no challenging characters, nothing whacky or unpredictable. Just a sort of typical soap opera.
Best character and arc was Gaitok who was likeable and seemed to have a cohesive arc. It was all about him getting over his anxieties so he could get a good paying job so he could fuck Mook which was satisfying.
I was disinterested in most of the characters by the end. Show appeals to lukewarm IQ havers. I doubt it will get back to first two seasons quality again. Mike White has given up on taking any risks, he's burned out of fresh ideas. They will keep churning this crap out but it's cooked. Genuinely appreciate the first two seasons it was fun while it lasted.

Lmao nailed it.
I think if you just looked at seasons 1 and 2 you could go OK there's a little overlap here but they still did a good job at differentiation. But season 3 was retreading everything they had already shown us.
What made the first two cutting and original prestige TV is that at the very least the characters were both a) truly messed up, and b) faced actual conflict. Not to mention all of this was achieved in much fewer episodes.

I enjoyed the first season. It was quirky and moderately entertaining.
The second season was ok. Not great, but not terrible. I binge-watched it one day when I was sick and didn't have anything better to watch.
Jennifer Coolidge really made the first two seasons. I enjoyed the absolute ridiculousness of her character.
I cannot get into the third season.

Coolidge leaving the cast created a big vacuum. The showrunners should have thought about how do we get a heavyweight and give them possibly a 2-season arc to anchor this. I think Sam Rockwell could have been an anchor with a more sophisticated character. Or Goggins if they wrote him differently. Really enjoyed Coon too but they underwrote her. Sometimes Mike gets too caught up in the group dynamic when he could just focus on a single character. Coolidge was such a character who didn't need to be part of an integrated ensemble in her arc.
Season 3 failed due to having too many options and making enough tough choices. Could have been a lot tighter.

This was easily the best written season from start to finish - all the meditations on the nature of self and finding peace. Also some of the most memorable characters - all were fully realized, even Greg got some new depth.
You’re completely wrong.

your take on gaitok arc is hilariously backwards.
he abandons his principles to get the girl and life he wants. this couldn't have been more spoon-fed. gaitok says he wasn't scared during the robbery and mook mentions that buddhism permits violence only in self-defense. he shoots rick in the back after he's no longer a threat. it wasn't about him overcoming his anxieties, it was about the good guy ultimately succumbing to his selfish desires in the ultimate betrayal of his moral code.

did you notice that he fearlessly ran towards the gunshots without hesitation and only became conflicted when the woman who could give him all his selfish desires was shouting at him to shoot a man in the back who was no longer a threat?
gaitok knows it wasn't self-defense. the audience *really* knows it's not self-defense because we've seen rick's arc. the fact he wouldn't be charged because the cops, who don't know what we know, would not charge gaitok is irrelevant.
this is clearly what the show intended to convey. it's wild you're dismissing it as "lukewarm iq" despite missing the point so badly you thought it conveyed the exact opposite of what it did.

I thought that the additional conflict of Daddario coming from nothing and having poor parents and having to work to survive was an important backdrop in what made that character interesting. Also probably Molly Shannon was an 11/10 on the Richter scale of epicly detached rich white excess, cementing that arc as forever memorable.
Piper was flat from the first episode. Never thought she was interesting. She never even formally rejects a life of excess, she just read some book and wanted to go on a spiritual journey and probably just spite her parents.
Rachel/Daddario has a genuine life altering choice to make. Just a better character in every way. Piper's biggest antagonist is her mom thought not going back to the research triangle and finding a rich husband right away but deferring that for a year was a big stain on the family? Weird lol. In every sense a rehash and a downgrade.

"it was a rehash"
"well the differences are..."
"yeah whatever it's boring."
well it's obvious why you didn't like this season, but at least you got to enjoy the feel-good story of gaitok not being a pussy and killing the bad guy and living happily ever after with his dream girl.

Big family dads ranked:
1. Steve Zahn and it's not close
2. Mike Imperioli
3. Jason Isaacs
Got worse with every season

Completely underrated aspect of season 3: Sam Rockwell was woefully underutilized and should have been a main character.
This lends to the theory that the writing is basically the same season to season but the magic of the actors is really what brings it to life. Sam could have had an amazing arc and would have blown the rest of the cast away.
Also I think Goggins character was boring as hell. I hated the Kill Bill arc. It was so flat. Hated the British chick too. Goggins is a genius but the writing wasn't great. They could have done a lot more. I thought he was going to be so good after a couple EPs but no. His arc sucked.

It had too many characters and as a result most felt more one-note or underdeveloped compared to prior seasons
Belinda probably being the one that should have been cut first

Key point alert!
Chelsea aka Goggin's gf sucked as a character. Great tit shot in E01 but that was it. Her whole character just worries about him and sighs and talks about astrology and won't fuck anybody. And she ate up a ton of screen time. 120 overall besides the cans.

Agreed. I think Goggins is a turbo genius at acting but they didn't write him good enough. Could have been epic. More Frank would have been epic. Almost felt like they were trying to balance portraying Thailand as a really nice normal place with the perception that it's all ladyboys with bad tit jobs. Meh. Wasted opportunity.
Piper should have fucked somebody. Chelsea definitely should have fucked somebody, probably Saxon. Saxon should have fucked Chloe in front of Greg.
I thought Season 2 was 10% worse than Season 1 but it looks like the Sistine Chapel compared to season 3 imho. I don't think I will ever rewatch season 3.

I agree. It had a few good moments but was ultimately hallow, just like everything else in modern tv. The reason for that is obvious. Modern shows are great at identifying a major underlying problem with society but have no solution for it (because actual morality is obsolete). So then they just abruptly end and you feel empty. This is why older shows still have meaning because they still had something resembling morality.
