BIGLAW or anything really prestigious, I just want my degree. It's an unsettling feeling. In undergrad I was always aiming for As but in LS I've almost just resigned myself to average. I'm a 1L, but is this really too soon? Maybe because I'm not that interested in my classes? I used to enjoy debates and presentations and now I don't really care about impressing others with argument. is this sort of a temporary thing that happens to a lot of people in 1L or should I be worried? I think I'm also a bit depressed because I used to be very active & would go to the gym on a daily basis and lately haven't been going as much (maybe 3x/week), so I'm not sure if that has something to do with motivation.

There is not one course in LS I could properly learn in 10 hrs... unless you get the very very basics of concepts, without any case analysis. But anyway, the 1:6 ratio is probably near correct.

I feel destroyed. It's not good as I have upcoming moots, etc.

Very good point. I won't forget standing for 45minutes in a 50minute class being grilled with questions I had NO answer to. That day was a very inefficient instructional session.

I'm living in my own apartment away from home, which I like. I like my school for the most part... impressing others isn't why I decided to go to law school, of course. I just used to be motivated by doing well and now I'm not.

I feel somewhat similarly. I know if I do decently well this term I'll graduate with honors, but I can't say that I really care, which is completely different from my attitude in college.

maybe it's because being in LS we feel some sense of security? I know I do... in UG I was scared about not being accepted into a good LS, and wanting to maintain a certain GPA because I knew it was important for admissions... but now it's like I don't care about clerking or BIGLAW, I guess I don't have set goals to aspire to, and maybe that's why. And I'd question whether I'd be smart enough for achieving some of them, if I did set them.

For me at least, I think it has more to do with having no real interest in 90% of the stuff we cover in class.

Yeah, now that you mention it I think that is exactly why I was not motivated because I didn't care to have a high GPA. I can also say that being forced to do something that requires an unrealistic amount of time and effort probably contributes to it also.

Bay Street hiring is still based on where you went to school and what your grades are. The overall structure not as hierarchical as the US because there are only one or two elite schools and a handful of lesser schools, with most others being about the same.

loss of motivation is a normal part of everything anyone does. sometimes you just have to motivate yourself to keep going anyway.

I would do as well as possible even if you don't want biglaw - better grades = more options.

You were scared you weren't going to get into a good law school, now you need to be scared you don't get a job after law school. Especially if you want to do corporate work. No such thing as being mediocre in law school yet being hired to do corporate work. Think you would like representing people at their DUI hearings? That's what you will be doing if you get median grades. I don't care what school you go to (well..except HLS and YLS) Get it together. Go to the gym more, do yoga, hook up with random boys, whatever. Join okcupid with the rest of this board to entertain yourself. Just don't blow off your grades. 1L classes suck. Who the hell likes any of that shit. I wanted to drop out after 1L. Just remember that law school is only for a very short time in your life.

And the Canadian job market will implode probably just when you graduate. Canadian real estate market today is what the US' was in 2007....
