Try 15 years.

They're a dime a dozen. Most are just college grads with 60th percentile computer skills and some lingo.

The best PMs are former engineers. They have a brighter future.

The bright young things are often overstaffed to make them dispensable.

Just like any corporate ladder job really. Some of them move up and become senior program managers and shit -- basically managers of a whole series of projects that fit together. They actually seem to in general have decent exit ops because they're exposed to a lot of diff roles and shit they can BS and act like they know how to do it

Usually they're scumbags hired by tech companies because CEOs don't trust ex-engineers to manage other engineers. So they often end up having important ears in their mouths, even if they have no power and unstable status.

It's a shit job if it doesn't lead to an executive position and it has the same ageism problem: at 40, you're out. The competition that you face in order to get into real management roles is different: less intelligent than engineers, but more socially skilled.

There's a project manager character in this batch of emails I'm reviewing, and all she seems to do is forward emails to people on her team with "Gentle Reminder!!!!" in the body.

This is me. I have no real skills. I am given credit for the success of projects that I really did nothing on except tell other people to do their work on time. I have received multiple raises and promotions and am being groomed for management. The technical people who actually did the project work are twice my age and seem to get invited to far fewer happy hours with senior management than me.

Oh, I don't consider it bad. But XO certainly would. There is an obsession here with "skills", and skills might get you in the door at a new employer but don't seem to correlate much with advancement inside an employer

I'm pretty much a project manager / product manager though it's kind of a hybrid role with some other more interesting shit.

My boss's boss is the Chief Marketing Officer and that's the office I'm gunning to end up in 10-15 years from now (at this company or a different one). The path there is clear enough, I think.
