VIII. A Jew shall not Marry a Person Nearly Related to him by Blood, or Contract Marriage without the Benediction of a Priest.
No Jew, of either sex, shall be permitted to marry a relative, either on the side of the wife or the husband, within the sixth degree, except according to the law imposed upon Christians; nor shall any Jew commit the crime of incest by marriage with a near relation. Those who violate the law by such an illicit union, shall undergo the following punishment, to wit: having been separated from one another each party shall receive a hundred lashes; they shall have their [389] heads shaved, be subjected to severe penance, and then be driven into exile, their property shall be given to such children as they may have had by a preceding marriage -- provided the latter have been in no way contaminated with the Jewish superstition, or polluted with the infamy of incestuous marriage. If, however, they should have no children, or, having them, the latter should be tainted with the Jewish error, or with the crime of incest, as aforesaid, then the property of said offender shall be forfeited to the king. The following, moreover, we direct shall be carefully observed in every respect, namely: that if any Jew, of either sex, after being converted, should desire to marry, he or she shall not be allowed to do so, unless a dowry is given, and a marriage contract entered into, as has prescribed in the case of Christians; nor shall such ceremony be permitted, where it is not accompanied with the sacerdotal benediction within the bosom of the Church. If any Jew should marry without the benediction of the Church, as aforesaid, or should transgress, in any way, the provision of the law relating to marriage contracts, said Jew, after purification by baptism, shall be compelled to pay a hundred solidi to the king, or shall receive fifty lashes in public. Each of the persons aforesaid, that is to say, the husband as well as the wife, shall be liable to said penalty or fine; and the parents of said parties shall also be liable to the same punishment for their infraction of the law.

Extremely cr. Actual interesting takehome lessons from Rome are from the punic wars. After that I don't know what there is to get into unless you're into the aesthetics. Certainly they didn't do SHIT worth noting after Justinian.
You could make a strong case for studying Justinian in isolation, just because we have so much data on him. Very fortuitous time for someone's rule to be recorded, what with all the plagues.

Holy fuck, I knew Justinian had some difficulties in Italy, but I didn't know Romans hated him this much:
----
The resultant chaos made the locals angry of the Greek-majority Eastern Roman force which took the city, and eventually nearly all of Italy started to hate them as monsters.
Popular belief is that the Roman cosmopolitan lifestyle totally ended when the Goths first sacked Rome in 476 AD. Wrong. Although it suffered a setback, it stumbled back on a prime for so many decades, ironically diligently preserved by the ruling Goths, with many antique buildings still remaining and well preserved and the Gothic ruling class being copycats of the elite Roman citizens of the past who profess the eccentric Roman lifestyle. Trade within the city and cash flow was routine as was before, although its population was reduced after the said sacking. At least the Germanic Goths were more willing to preserve all of this at any cost.
The conquests of Justinian I put an end to all that. When he finally got his hand on Italy thanks for his brilliant general Flavius Belisarius, it was nothing more but a heap of ruins and burning wheatfields brought about by the war between the two warring sides.
This was only worsened by the differing religions between the mostly Catholic Italians and the mostly Orthodix Byzantines, with the Pope in Rome constantly berating the latter as unworthy of the leadership of the Christendom and the local Catholic populace being angry over the religious discrimination by the ruling Orthodox authorities. It only even got worse and worse when the controversial iconoclasm spawned off Constantinople as a result of it being saved from the Arab assault sometime during the early 700′s AD, setting the path for the eventual schism between the two religions.
The Italians’, and the Romans’, disillusionment of the Greek-led imperials led them to shift loyalties to whoever conqueror stumbles on the land. Their disillusionment which have been lingering for so many years after Justinian’s bloody taking of the city eventually came to fruition, however, when Rome in a complete act of irony broke itself off from the Roman Empire in 756 AD, apparently fed up by the discriminating behaviour of the Greek-led imperials, effectively declaring and achieving independence from the empire it itself verily founded and became the Papal States, the predecessor of the Vatican City.
