American 20th century writer of supernatural fiction; conservative convert to Catholicism. Very moral/allegorical stories, but although heavy handed they're not unentertaining. Would highly recommend World Fantasy Award-winning "There's A Long, Long Trail A-Winding," which you can probably find online somewhere. Supernatural story about an avuncular, itinerant, guilt-ridden hobo who, like all of us, is both too easy on himself (he makes many little allowances for his sins and crimes) and too hard on himself (he believes himself to be beyond forgiveness).
It's a touching and entertaining story, and just when you're starting to forget that you were reading horror fiction, Kirk turns up the intensity for a thrilling climax.
It's a masterpiece of wonder and fear, and a good Christian allegory.
