But then...they evolved.
Congratulations (2010) flipped the script with weirder, proggier vibes—think "Siberian Breaks"—and proved they weren’t afraid to ditch the mainstream playbook.
By the time Little Dark Age (2018) rolled around, "Me and Michael" showcased a band that could still craft a synth-drenched earworm with lyrical depth and a haunting edge.
Overrated bands don’t sustain that kind of creative arc across a decade; they fizzle out or churn out derivative sludge.
Compare that to Franz Ferdinand and Arctic Monkeys.
Franz had a hot start with "Take Me Out" and that self-titled debut (2004), but they’ve been recycling the same angular post-punk riffs ever since, with diminishing returns. Their later albums feel like echoes of a sound that peaked early.
Arctic Monkeys, meanwhile, get endless hype for Alex Turner’s lyrical swagger and their genre-hopping—from the raw Whatever People Say I Am (2006) to the loungey Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino (2018). They’re good, no question, but the reverence feels inflated when half their catalog leans on nostalgia or overcooked experimentation. MGMT’s output, by contrast, stays consistently inventive without begging for applause.
"Me and Michael" itself is a rebuttal to the "overrated" tag. It’s got that shimmering, bittersweet vibe—layered synths, a driving beat, and lyrics that hint at identity and loss without spoon-feeding you. It’s not just a song; it’s a mood, a slow burn that sticks.
Overrated bands don’t pull that off years into their career—they lean on past hits or fade into irrelevance.
MGMT keeps delivering gems while dodging the indie cliché trap.
AutoAdmit takes smacks of someone who heard "Kids" on a playlist once and decided MGMT’s whole deal is overhyped-LJL.
No, faggot. They’ve got range, staying power, and a knack for balancing accessibility with oddball brilliance. Franz and Arctic might have their merits, but slapping MGMT as #1 overrated is a swing and a miss.

Bloom (2012) turned dream pop into astral projection—"Myth", "Lazuli", "Wishes". These are not songs, they are soundtracks to moments of existential clarity. Depression Cherry (2015) & Thank Your Lucky Stars (2015)—a one-two cosmic knockout that broke reality into soft neon hues. 7 (2018) introduced darker textures, a celestial warping of their signature sound, proving that they are not just ethereal, but omnipotent within their space. You don’t compare Beach House and MGMT like they’re two contestants in some ill-fated indie Thunderdome. That’s AutoAdmit brain rot. You don’t compare a cathedral to a rollercoaster—you stand in awe of both.
