One raised his hand and asked me if I had a wife bc I was wearing a ring. I said yes. He smirked. Then an hour later I asked a girl to put her phone away and the guy screams out “Somebody go get Professor Pumo’s wife! She dancing like a stripper!” The whole room started screaming and howling.
Then 15 minutes later I was speaking and another student cuts me off and says that I look like “Goldust.”
Again the room started screaming and howling. Not worth the shit paycheck I’ll get 6 months from now. |

Most students won't even remember the failed "Seven" gimmick so the comparisons are much less of a low-hanging fruit than "Golddust." Sort of a high-risk high-reward play because getting called out by a 90s wrestling superfan would be devastating though. |

The key is to quickly identify any troublemakers and address the issue before it escalates — kind of like dealing with the alpha in a wolf pack. Don’t hesitate to tell students to leave the class if necessary; maintaining order is your responsibility. Teaching college freshman is basically like being a high school teacher; you're as much a disciplinarian as an educator. Consider also making "professionalism" part of the class grade -- e.g. behaving respectfully, not using phones during class, not creating disruptions that prevent others from learning, etc. This way you can punish bad behavior beyond words.
