Plenty of savings. Student loans @ low interest. Interviewed at 5-6 V50-V100s and one boutique before I was fired cause I knew it was coming but didnt get an offer. NYC apartment with roommate so rent isn't too huge a drag.

Went to Vegas on a whim for a weekend and ended up staying about 2 weeks. Was pretty fucking awesome. Now I'm thinking of just not interviewing for awhile and chilling, but will this ruin my chances of ever returning to lawfirm life in any respect other than SHITLAW?

the connections out of HYP are overrated... you will meet maybe 3-4 people that are "well connected" through their families.

I worked at a top notch firm where all the YLS slackers in my class quit/were pushed out in their first two years. So I was basically bottom of the barrel of what was left, and wasn't getting enough work. Plus partners were bitching about my writing. I fucked up a couple of things too. Basically just didnt "develop" as an atty fast enough. With not enough people quitting on their own, the firm has to push bottom tier performers like me out.

You're a dumbass for getting fired. It is HARD to get fired from a BIGLAW gig especially V10 firms. They only do it if you seriously fuck shit up and don't improve after being give months of warnings.

Maybe while you are out of work you should think about why you are a bad employee because chances are you'll go to your next job and the same thin will happen. Perhaps you should consider going back to school to get another degree and go into a different profession.

False. False. False.

People get fired from V-10's all the time. It's called being choked off of hours and fired for failure to make hours. It takes six months. And you're not improving. You're not doing anything except interviewing (unless you're too dumb to realize you are being chocked out of work and striving for work via pro bono and other useless work).

Biglaw jobs are temp jobs. Seriously.

I've been in BIGLAW for years. The only people who get asked to leave are literally associates who (a) don't bill shit for at least six months straight even though there is work in the office; and (b) do shitty work on whatever they do actually bill.

Usually they are the elitist fucks who went to top schools and think their shit is sweeter. They come into BIGLAW and don't want to put the effort in to actually learn how to practice law.

Compared to other professions it is VERY hard to get fired from BIGLAW as an attorney. Hell compared even to paralegals and secretaries it is so much harder. They have dinged secretaries in my office for having a bad two weeks.

BIGLAW lawyers are fucking spoiled. If you can manage to go to a t14 but you can't survive in BIGLAW for more than four or five years then you are just unmotivated and lazy.

Worked in Gibson and DPW (before leaving for the gov't) and I have to say you're full of crap.

Women routinely get starved for work, which leads to you being laid off. One or two years after your one maternity leave.

Minorities: the same.

White men: a mixed bag, but yes. Layoffs victims abound.

It's about being starved off. Not because you're smart or failed to be on law review or whatever. But because you do not fit within the narrow confines of what is demanded of biglaw associates. And the massive amount of competition among associates in the same class (and partners gunning for you to be fired to save their own asses) make it so that getting fired isn't anything more than bad luck.

You must be a corporate associate because most BIGLAW firms litigation departments are still busy. It is rare to get "starved" for work in litigation unless all the partners fucking hate you cause you have screwed shit up in the past.

BIGLAW firms are notorious for being overly nice to fucking shity associates instead of just canning them immediately like almost every other fucking profession would do.

Exactly. And litigators get starved off routinely. It's a matter of working for a partner who decides to leave for a bigger paycheck at a different firm and leaves you behind or that four big cases settle in a row or senior associates, junior partners hoard work midlevels and juniors ought to be doing ("because it's just easier for me to do this. I work more quickly"). Like I said, it happens. It's bad luck mostly and attrition isn't a reflection of the quality or smarts of the associates sticking around. I know plenty of dumb asses running around DPW still. It's luck.

And no, it's not sour grapes. I left on my own to do two clerkships and wanted to be in gov't after two years of firm life.

Budget a lifestyle where you and your family will make no more than 70K a year (excluding student loan payments) and prepare to leave on your own or get fired within 3 years.

And from what I've seen from friends, there is even less support for younger attorneys as they seem to get the brunt of the spoiled/entitled bs you hear from partners.
